    Can I include Scorpio 4x4 also in this thread? It's a Mahindra 4x4 too. Not too many offroad mods, per say other than all-terrain tyres, alloys, LED lights, raised suspension and a bunch of off-road recovery kit.
    Drink coffee and drive!

        Okay, 2014 stock Thar which has done 20000 kilometers by now! Enjoyed every bit of driving it, be it the city or the hills. The road presence, commanding driving position, excellent ground clearance, punchy engine- low end torque makes it instantly lovable. And I love that old school feel, that big steering wheel, lack of any electronics and even how heavy the bonnet feels when you shut it. Off-road, it is one maniac!

        Few niggles, Mahindra should have put safety features like ABS & Airbags at least as an option. In case of an accident, I am pretty sure the Thar will come out unscathed, but occupants might not live to see it! Can Thar be fitted with these features? Help me out.

        Now, Time for some upgrades. Need a hardtop, bigger AT tyres (descent size, happy with 255 section tyres!), off-road bumpers and sportier side steps. Suggestions please. And are those LED light bars legal in India, especially Kerala?

        Can we replace the leaf-spring suspension at the back? Will it improve on-road mannerisms? Will coil springs at the back affect off-road abilities? It wavers a lot at high speeds. Where should i start? Ps: ignore the camera bag in the picture, only had this one!

            Thanks Jeep Captain . I have two Scorpio 4WDs, but surprisingly few photographs of both! I'm posting pics here of my trusty old one - which I fondly call Fox (and now Fox 1, for lack of anything imaginative to call the new one). Fox 1 has been with me since April 2006. It's a 4WD CRDe Dx. So far it has done 1.87 lakh km and climbing, although for the past six months, it has not done too many long trips. I've explored so many places with her. Rajasthan, Ladakh, Nepal etc.

            No major mechanical mods have been done. I can list the accessories though:
            * LED Oledone 40w light bars
            * Bull bar (modular)
            * 90/100 Hella headlight bulbs
            * 55w Hella Rallye 700FF lights
            * Yokohama Geolandar AT-S - 235/70 R16 all-terrain tyres (second set now)
            * JVC AVX 44 System, LCD screens, Subwoofer
            * Recovery kit - Hand winch, 5-ton tow strap, D-shackles, high-lift jack, air-compressor, full tool kit
            * Seat covers
            * GPS tracking device
            * Gear lock
            * Dashcam (Alria rear-view mirror DVR)
            * Reverse camera, reversing mirror
            * Steel engine sump guard (eventually broke off)
            * Minor suspension lift
            ... and some more stuff.
            Planned but did not do:
            * Locking rear differential
            * Off-road bumpers
            Drink coffee and drive!

                Nikhil Kalra, first picture was from Narkanda. Had gone last January, when it was snowing. Fox 1 performed beautifully in snow, making full use of the four-wheel drive system. Managed to go beyond where most tourists could go, thanks to such a capable 4x4 vehicle. The only fellow travellers I met were also driving 4x4 Thars, a Scorpio and a Landcruiser :-)

                    Hi Amit Deol - the actual hand winch is lying in my garage right now. So sharing a photo of what it looks like from the Net. I think I got a raw deal on it from 4x4 Adventure (Museum Road, Bangalore) back in 2007. Narayan Murthy charged me a pretty exorbitant sum for it. I also bought the Hi-Lift, Lift Kit accessories and some other stuff from him, for a pretty tidy sum. This hand winch is rated at 3 tons I think. Online, I see people selling it for about 3K (and I'm too embarrassed to reveal how much I was charged then).
                    Here's a pic of what it looks like. It has a racheting mechanism, which reels in the cable as you pull the lever back and forth. Exhausting, but fun when you get stuck! A combination of this hand winch and a high-lift and a couple of wooden planks should get you out of any situation if you go offroading alone.

                      Thanks JijoMalayil,

                      I can help you to modify your Thar with all t he accessories mentioned. All ancilalry lights other than stock/factory fitted lights are technically illegal. But many Thar owners and offroaders are using them in KL.
                      For the rear suspension, there are two options , one is to go for CFL's ( Carbon Fiber leaf springs). They are good if combined with performance shock absorbers. But many who went for this option are complaining about added body roll. Other option is to go for Janaih leaf springs which is actually hand made by a 80 year old man called Janaih in Hyderabad. Its almost similar to the the stock leaf springs but with added supporting plates.

                      Cheers
                      JC
