  • Which Automatic Hatchback Should I Buy?

Hi, I am from Mumbai. I have shortlisted 2 automatic hatchbacks - Maruti Suzuki Wagon R and Hyundai Grand i10. Which one do you recommend? Is there any other automatic hatchback which can be compared with the above two?

There's a fundamental difference between the Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R automatic and the Hyundai Grand i10 automatic. The Wagon-R is an AMT (automated manual transmission), which means it is almost similar to the manual with the same 5-speed gearbox, except that it has no clutch pedal and gear shifting takes place automatically, by means of electronic motors. The Hyundai Grandi i10 has a proper torque converter automatic transmission - a 4-speed one. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Wagon-R is much better. The Grand i10 will be smoother though, with fewer jerks from the transmission. If you had to pick between these two, I would suggest the Maruti Wagon-R AMT, as maintenance is easier and fuel efficiency is much better. In the same segment you also have the Honda Brio automatic (5-speed torque converter) and the Maruti Celerio AMT - which is slightly better than the Wagon-R in terms of features. Then there is the Nissan Micra CVT - an underrated car. It is very smooth to drive and gives decent fuel efficiency, as CVT boxes have a very large number of gear ratios, ideally matched to engine speeds. The Micra is a bit more expensive than the other two though.
    Drink coffee and drive!

Amish Parekh I think you should consider Celerio AMT, it is almost same price as Wagon R and has better features ,newer model, looks(subjective). Grand i10 Automatic is much costly but feels more premium but you lose on mileage part. Recently there was news that Kwid Automatic may be launching soon but not sure how soon.

Amish Parekh I think a car you should consider is the Nissan Micra CVT(automatic). The car had a price cut(Now @ 5.99 lakh ex-delhi) making it the most affordable automatic car in the premium hatchback segment. The Grand i10 automatic uses a traditional 4 speed automatic gearbox which is a torque converter type. It offers smoother gear shifts when compared to the jerky action of the Celerio and Wagon R's AMT(Automated manual Transmission) gearbox but at the cost of fuel efficiency. The AMT on the other hand is a cost effective technique of converting an existing manual transmission to automatic(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0h77X7cwJA). It boasts of better fuel efficiency than a traditional automatic and even the same manual gearbox which it is based upon. but the problem is that it is very jerky while shifting and a bit numb when driven at a faster pace. This is where the Nissan Micra makes more sense. It uses a CVT gearbox which is smoother than the AMT yet fuel efficient than the torque converter. The price cut makes it excellent value for money as well. Even the base XL CVT model Features ABS with EBD with Brake Assist, Driver Side Airbag, Speed Sensitive Door Locks, Follow me Home Head Lights, Push start button, 4 Door Power Windows, Central Locking, Adjustable Head Restraints in Front and Rear Seat(Which is getting rarer these days), It has a Music System with Aux, USB and Bluetooth Phone Pairing. you can also opt for sporty all black interior in the Orange color as well. The Micra is trouble free and easy on the pocket when it comes to maintenance. Do have a look. Regards...
