  • Jeep Renegade Spied Testing !

Jeep Renegade has been spied testing in Delhi recently. According to the import data received from an online portal, the Renegade will cost around Rs. 18-20 lacs in India. Both the 4X2 and the 4X4 variants of the Renegade have been imported in India for R&D purposes. The imported test mules of the Renegade are powered by an in-line four cylinder 2000 cc diesel Multijet2 engine which is currently powering the European model. This 2-litre unit is available in two different tunes - 138 bhp and 168 bhp mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 9-speed automatic unit respectively. Interestingly, Jeep showed only the Wrangler and the Cherokee SRT at the Auto Expo, but not the Renegade.

On a lighter note, there is Junta (read Thar Owners) who will face serious identity crisis once they realize they don't own a 'Jeep in the real sense.' when this one is launched.

I expect the Renegade will go for Skoda Yeti money. Anything more and you've got people drawing parallels with the Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner. Nope, won't help if they price it more than say Rs. 22-23 lakh tops. Plus, n00b , there will be a bunch of Thar owners who will start modifying Thars to look like Wranglers (a lot already do that). After all the Thar and Wrangler have evolved from the same platform - the Jeep CJ5 style.

Yep, pricing will be a major factor here. Prices should ideally start from 18 Lakh for the 4X2 variant and top of the line 4X4 (around 22ish) should sit comfortably below the Wrangler price window.

Another shot of Jeep Renegade being tested on Indian roads. As per Zauba.com, the carmaker has imported around 14 units for research and development. Both in 4x2 and 4x4 variants mated to diesel engines. The point to be noted is that Jeep hasn't confirmed Renegade for Indian markets yet. Strange?

Some more spy photos of the Jeep Renegade, this time clicked by 4x4 India member Deepak Shetty. The Renegade is likely to be launched later this year, after the Jeep Wrangler and the Cherokee SRT. CYRUS43 drove the Jeep Renegade in Moab, Utah a few months ago, and you may want to check out his Jeep Renegade First Drive Report.

The Jeep Renegade in India is likely to come with 1.6 litre petrol and 2 litre diesel engines. The one that was tested had a 2.4 litre petrol engine putting out 180PS of power and 237 Nm of peak torque, with an all-wheel drive system and 9 speed automatic. In India, manual transmission with 4x2 and 4x4 options would be offered to keep costs low.

The Renegade comes with a squared off design. It will likely be the 'cheapest' Jeep in India, slotting in below the Wrangler at Rs. 18 lakh to Rs. 22 lakh, and will help in popularizing the brand. It's main rival would be the Skoda Yeti in that price segment.
