  • Datsun Redi-Go: launch just around the corner?

Datsun (owned by Nissan), is all set to introduce its entry-level hatchback in India, the Redi-Go. As per reliable sources, Redi-GO will be launched on the 14th of April this year. Redi-GO is based on Renault-Nissan alliance's CMF-A which is also found in Renault Kwid.

The test-mule is very similar to the concept version, the car features a similar, curvy rear profile with and large bumpers. Datsun's signature hexagonal honeycomb pattern grille and chrome slat is likely to be retained in the production version. Sculpted bonnet and swept-back headlamps give it a lot of aggression.

Datsun Redi-GO will be powered by Renault's 800cc three-cylinder petrol motor that does duty on the Kwid. Even power options are expected to be similar at 53 bhp of power and 74 Nm of torque. The engine will be mated to a five-speed transmission, with a possibility of an AMT gearbox soon. Redi-Go will rival Maruti Suzuki's Alto 800, Hyundai Eon and Renault Kwid in the highly competitive entry-level hatchback segment. Expect Datsun to price Redi-GO in the 2.5-3.5 lakh rupees range in India.

Datsun is reportedly developing a diesel engine for its upcoming hatch, the Redi-GO. According to Autocar professional, Nissan is working on a 1.0 litre, 3-cylinder diesel motor, and is slated for a 2017 launch in the Diesel variant of the Redi-Go. The petrol variant of the Redi-GO is speculated to be unveiled on the 14th of April.

The publication estimates the power output of the 1.0 litre diesel engine in the 55 bhp range. Nissan has outsourced the development of this engine to Hinduja Technologies, which was previously known as Defiance Technologies.

Datsun Redi-Go has been spotted testing in Bangalore - and that is a good thing. They certainly have picked the right city for it, given the market positioning and the state of Bangalore roads.

Datsun, a subsidiary of Nissan was unable to capture the imagination of the Indian entry-level segment buyers with their earlier models, the Go and the Go+. Will the upcoming Redi-Go be able to break the jinx? As seen from the spy photos, the Datsun Redi-Go, will get crossover-like styling but will look different from the Kwid, and will receive Datsun family styling touches like the grille, sweptback headlamps among others. I quite like the tall-boy design, sculpted bootlid and high-set tail lamps. All these design elements are likely to translate into a generous cabin on the inside, plus a size-able boot (perhaps larger than the Kwid-at 300 litres?).

Many components are likely to be shared with the Renault Kwid, like the wheels, tyre size and the three lug-nut setup as well. The engine will also be borrowed from the Kwid - the same 800cc petrol motor which puts out 54 PS @ 5678 rpm of maximum power and 96 Nm @ 2500 rpm of peak torque. Datsun is reportedly developing a diesel engine for its upcoming hatch, the Redi-Go, and that engine will most probably make its debut in 2017. Power output of this 1.0 litre diesel engine is estimated to be in the range of 55 bhp. With Datsun being positioned lower in the Nissan-Renault alliance, expect aggressive pricing with the Redi-Go. Will it undercut the Renault Kwid?

No, it won't undercut the Kwid, as Datsun (Nissan) has borrowed the platform and engine from Renault (like in the case of Duster).
My prediction is a starting tag of Rs.2.99 lacs ex-delhi. Nissan deliberately didn't showcase the Redi-Go at the Delhi Auto Expo to capitalize the maximum hype at the time of launch.

n00b I don't think so. Datsun doesn't have the brand image to justify a higher price tag, than say a Renault Kwid. With the majority of the components shared, Datsun might have to go all-out for an aggressive pricing to make an impact with the Redi-Go. Plus it will overlap with Datsun Go prices, which starts at 3.23 lakh rupees and has a 1.2 litre engine. What say?

Datsun has just sent a new "teaser sketch" of the Datsun Redigo that is to be launched on April 14th. Here's the sketch. In my opinion, I don't see why a sketch like this would really pique interest considering one can get a fair idea of what the car will look like from the concept shown above.

So Datsun is releasing a sketch-a-day in the run up to the Datsun Redigo reveal on April 14. This was the sketch that was sent on April 9.

And here is the sketch that was sent on April 10. So far, from what I can see the sketch looks pretty much like the RediGo concept (see above) that was revealed at the Auto Expo 2014.

Datsun has released more pictures of its upcoming hatch, the Redi-Go. Guess what? Looks exactly similar to the concept that was showcased at the Delhi Auto Expo.

The only visible difference is a more conventional head and tail-lamp pattern, and not too sure if these wheels would make it to the production version!

The Redi-Go looks good, but I still fail to understand the Renault-Nissan's logic behind launching the Datsun brand in India, especially at the time when they themselves are sliding down to the lowest end of the spectrum.
I really wonder where the Redi-Go will be priced.
If priced above the Kwid, it'll definitely be in the 'Red(i)' from the word 'Go' [pun intended ]
And if it's priced below the Kwid, it'll have to lose the bits that make the Kwid such a great overall package.

Datsun in all probability is just going to unveil the Redi-Go tomorrow. Expect prices and cars to reach a dealer near you somewhere around the festive time this year.
