Just when you think Uber is going all hi-tech betting heavily on driverless cars, today Uber in India tied up with Maruti and National Skill Development Corporation [NSDC] to create livelihood opportunities for a staggering 1 million people, that to in a short timeline of 2 years, by 2018.
The initiative is called UberSHAAN.
Under this initiative, Uber along with Maruti Suzuki will organize driver training and onboarding programmes for new drivers. Thru NSDC, Uber will also deliver and promote skill building in the automobile sector, as well as impart soft skills to new and existing drivers.
After completion of the training and receipt of a commercial license, Uber will offer the new drivers vehicle financing and leasing options to help them get started in the profession.
Uber seems to be focussing on increasing it's driver strength at least in India. Although driverless cars are only a few years away, these actually hitting Indian roads in substantial numbers is still quite a long time away. In the meantime, these drivers should contribute towards Uber's goal of becoming the number one taxi aggregator in India.
