  • BMW Pays Homage To The Iconic 2002 Turbo in Italy

German carmaker BMW unveiled the BMW 2002 Hommage at the Concorso d’Eleganza in Italy on May 20th. Built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic BMW 2002 range, the 2002 Homage is considered as a modern day interpretation of the 2002 Turbo. The BMW 2002 range was the beginning of the era of high performance sedans. 50 years ago, it was one of the few cars that featurered a turbocharger.

The 2002 Hommage is based on the BMW 2 Series. The concept has compact proportions, a long wheelbase, short overhangs and a ‘shark nose’ inspired by the 2002 Turbo. It also gets a front and rear spoiler for maximum downforce during high-speed cornering, sculpted features on the side profile and big wheel arches inspired by the original car.

The 2002 Homage’s kidney grilles are low-set. The slats are painted black and the surrounds are finished in matte silver. It has two single headlights like the original too. There is a Turbo badge next to the left headlight and M tricolour paint on the ORVM enclosures and front apron.

The side is sculpted and flared wheel arches give it an aggressive stance. At the rear, the taillights are similar in design to the 2002 Turbo. The BMW logo sits right in between the license plate and right taillamp. Two stets of matte-finish twin tailpipes pop out of a carbon diffuser. Looks bloody mean doesn’t it? BMW, just go ahead and make it will you.

Finally, some pictures of the 2002 Hommage next to the 2002 Turbo. I think BMW has got the reimagined 2002 spot-on. What do you think?

The flared wheel arches looks oh so cool!

I think the 2002 Hommage's rear end looks way better than the stock 2-Series'

Here's a couple of more of them parked next to each other.

The 2002 Turbo made it’s first appearance at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show. This was BMW’s first turbocharged production car. It produced 170hp @ 5,800rpm and 240Nm of peak torque which made it too fast for its time. Sadly, the 2002 Turbo was launched just before the 1973 oil crisis and as a result died a quick death with only 1,672 units being built.

My head says BMW is trying to hard - the 2002 Turbo is simply elegant. No aggressive cuts, swooshes, curves and what not to get your attention.

But my heart, oh my heart!
        Be nice
