Before you start drooling over the images below, you should know few things about the Bugatti Chiron. To start with, it replaces the epitome of automotive excellence - the Bugatti Veyron.
Technically owned by Volkswagen AG, the brand "Bugatti" is used to showcase their engineering and design at the highest level with every subsequent model. The Veyron has a soft spot in every enthusiasts heart, and not just because it is or should I say was the fastest car in the world, but because it was the full package. Chiron has high expectations to meet
Apparently, the newly worked quad-turbocharged 'VV 16' unit (thats two V8's with four turbos ), has been extensively worked upon to add 25% more power. I think this is completely over the top, no one said the old one wasn't grunty enough. Just to let you know, the power rating of the Bugatti Veryon Super Sport was 1183 bhp, that essentially is the power of 25 Alto 800's in a car that weighs just 1.5 times!
The Chiron shares a lot of characteristics with the Veyron, including some chassis and powertrain parts along with the 'electronically limited top speed', but is a far more technologically advanced machine.
Major changes have been made to the injectors (there are 32 of them) and the "Charge Air Cooling" (intercooler) system to allow a greater mixture of air and fuel to burn in the gigantic 8-liter unit. The result - a mind boggling 1478 bhp! Torque available is a massive 1600 Nm, from as low as 2000 rpm to 6000 rpm redline. All this is able to propel this 2000 kg monster to more than 430 km/h. This power is transmitted to all four wheels, using the 'made for Chiron' 7 speed dual clutch transmission.
0 - 100 km/h in a mere 2.5 seconds. That's how long it took you to read this sentence.
The exhaust system is also re-worked on, it now has a less-restrictive titanium construction. It works with 4 pre-coverters and 2 main catalytic converters.
Fun Fact : Bugatti says the surface area of the converters is about 2,30,266 m2. This is as much as 30 soccer fields.
The rear design is something which i'll take some time to digest. I am a fan of those 4 round lights of the Veyron, which sort of become symbolic around the world.
Another first by Bugatt is the all new monocoque chassis, which is a carbon-fibre unibody, unlike the steel rear end of the Veyron. This makes for stiffness and rigidity levels close to that of LMP1 race cars!
The tires on this car have been co-developed by Michelin. Every tire has to withstand more than 400 Nm of torque individually. The front gets a 285/30 R20 size, whereas the rear has the more bulky 325/25 R21 due to engine being mounted on it.
Fun Fact : Every gram of rubber on the tire is exposed to a centrifugal force which is 3,800 times the force of gravity!!
It has 5 drive modes - 'Lift, Auto, Autobahn, Handling and Top Speed'. The first four of which are activated via a dial on the steering wheel, and the last of which is activated via a special key. Each of these modes basically activates the 'adaptive chassis' and tampers with height adjustment, shock damping, electric power steering feel, four-wheel drive system (including the rear diff lock), the aerodynamic control system and the vehicle stability control.
As the name suggests, the Lift mode raises the suspension for going over questionable surfaces. The Auto mode steps in at speeds over 50 km/h and actively adjusts damping and ride height for comfort nd handling. Post 180 km/h is when the magic happens and the Autobahn mode steps in, it accounts for your comfort and yet makes the dampers more suited for high-speed stability. The Handling mode is where all hell breaks loose and the car tightens the steering and stiffens the dampers, and comfort is thrown out of the window - its a race-car now.
The interiors are as sophisticated and classy as they get. You will feel special inside one of these.
