  • Agra to Lucknow in just 3 hours with New Expressway

Delhi-Agra-Lucknow is now a journey that can theoretically take just five hours, thanks to the new Agra-Lucknow expressway. This 302 km six-lane expressway has the potential to be expanded to 8 lanes in the future. And as part of the "highways as runways" plan, during the inauguration day on November 21, a fleet of fighter aircraft touched down on a section of the expressway to showcase its potential as a runway during war-like situations.

If you are planning to drive down to Lucknow from Delhi now, the drive just got a lot simpler. The Agra-Lucknow expressway connects to the end of the Yamuna Expressway from Greater Noida to Agra. Here are some quick facts about the Agra-Lucknow expressway.

It has 13 major bridges - with two big ones across the Yamuna and across the Ganga. The one across the Ganga is an 8-lane bridge. There are 57 minor bridges, 4 rail over bridges, 148 pedestrian underpasses, 9 flyovers and 74 vehicle underpasses on this expressway. The entire stretch has a metal guard rail and is a divided highway with 3-4 lanes on either side. The expressway is totally 302 km long from Agra to Lucknow.

Travel time from Delhi to Lucknow should now be only about 6 hours in all. Although the expressway is designed for vehicular speeds of 120 kmph, the speed limit is 100 kmph on it, just like the Yamuna Expressway. But one major difference is that unlike the Yamuna Expressway which is a concrete highway, the Agra-Lucknow expressway is a tarmac topped expressway. This is good because although it may not be as durable as concrete, it will not heat up car tyres as much and not cause sudden tyre bursts that have been quite common on the Yamuna Expressway.

The Expressway will have a green belt on either side. It already passes through several green fields along the way. The towns of Shikohabad, Firozabad, Mainpuri, Etawa, Kannauj, Kanpur (outskirts), Unnao and Hardoi fall along the way.

(Google has not updated its maps yet, so this Agra-Lucknow expressway does not show up. However, it is visible in Google Earth)

So who's up for ZigDrive 9: The Great Lucknow Kebab Run on December 17, 2016? (Plan to be finalized)

Roshun, I am a hundred percent up for the Great Kebab Run! Cannot wait to drive on this one.
From the Google Earth view, it seems like a very tempting road.
My only concern is remains to be the same with the Agra Expressway - What is being done about the number of people who land up on the Expressway from the nearby villages for their morning Yoga and walks? I have seen soo many groups indulging in all sorts of activities in the grassy patch next to the road. It is quite dangerous.
    No traction, more action!

We are planning a drive on this expressway soon. Any chance you will be coming up North? I don't think Tamil Nadu has any expressways yet, although some of the highways are really nice.

Roshun my only problem with expressways is that even though they make the journey shorter, most of them are not scenic. The boring terrain makes me feel drowsy sometimes. That's the same problem I have with highways in central and north Tamil Nadu too. But towards the south, after Tirunelveli, things start getting interesting with the Western Ghats looming large and those giant windmills all the way till Nagercoil. The only scenic expressway I've been on so far is the Mumbai-Pune one with the brilliant twisty sections and those long tunnels. That's an interesting drive.

BTW I've done two famous expressways of India. One Pune - Mumbai EW with my punto and YEW in my cousin's linea. So eager to do this EW too.

The beauty of drive is lost and the focus on time and to evade penalty takes over. Pune-Mumbai is an exception of course.

With 800 rupee flight tickets, it's all too tempting! While the south may not have any designated expressways, the highways in the south are great roads themselves. Both scenic as well as well laid out.

We are going on a Saturday and coming back on Sunday, just to be safe. We don't want complications because of the fog, hence this gives us flexibility with plans. Are you coming? Get that cheap flight ticket now :-)
