Delhi-Agra-Lucknow is now a journey that can theoretically take just five hours, thanks to the new Agra-Lucknow expressway. This 302 km six-lane expressway has the potential to be expanded to 8 lanes in the future. And as part of the "highways as runways" plan, during the inauguration day on November 21, a fleet of fighter aircraft touched down on a section of the expressway to showcase its potential as a runway during war-like situations.
If you are planning to drive down to Lucknow from Delhi now, the drive just got a lot simpler. The Agra-Lucknow expressway connects to the end of the Yamuna Expressway from Greater Noida to Agra. Here are some quick facts about the Agra-Lucknow expressway.
It has 13 major bridges - with two big ones across the Yamuna and across the Ganga. The one across the Ganga is an 8-lane bridge. There are 57 minor bridges, 4 rail over bridges, 148 pedestrian underpasses, 9 flyovers and 74 vehicle underpasses on this expressway. The entire stretch has a metal guard rail and is a divided highway with 3-4 lanes on either side. The expressway is totally 302 km long from Agra to Lucknow.
Travel time from Delhi to Lucknow should now be only about 6 hours in all. Although the expressway is designed for vehicular speeds of 120 kmph, the speed limit is 100 kmph on it, just like the Yamuna Expressway. But one major difference is that unlike the Yamuna Expressway which is a concrete highway, the Agra-Lucknow expressway is a tarmac topped expressway. This is good because although it may not be as durable as concrete, it will not heat up car tyres as much and not cause sudden tyre bursts that have been quite common on the Yamuna Expressway.
The Expressway will have a green belt on either side. It already passes through several green fields along the way. The towns of Shikohabad, Firozabad, Mainpuri, Etawa, Kannauj, Kanpur (outskirts), Unnao and Hardoi fall along the way.

So who's up for ZigDrive 9: The Great Lucknow Kebab Run on December 17, 2016? (Plan to be finalized)
