The folks at Maranello recently had a nice surprise in store, unleashing its newest prancing horse in its stable called the Daytona SP3. This mid-engined supercar pays homage to the 330 P3/4, 330 P4 and 412 P racers that took a 1-2-3 finish at the 1967 24 Hour Of Daytona.
With that in mind, here’s five ways the Ferrari Daytona SP3 not only honours the three race cars in fine style, but also keeps in line with the carmaker’s modern design philosophy:
Most Powerful Prancing Horse
While carmakers elsewhere are moving towards more compact engines, Ferrari being Ferrari still gives its trusty mid-mounted 6.5-litre V12 engine some love, as the Daytona SP3 borrows it from the 812 Competizione. The difference here is that at 840PS and 697Nm, it's the most powerful internal combustion-engined model from Ferrari. Paired to a 7-speed DCT gearbox, it can sprint to 100kmph from a standstill in just 2.85 seconds, and can hit a 340kmph top speed. The best part, it’s an open-top beast so you can hear that screaming V12 unfiltered.
Performance Wizardry Galore
Considering its racing pedigree, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the Daytona SP3 uses F1-derived composite materials for the chassis, body panels, and the tub to make it a featherweight at 1485kg. Keeping it stuck to the ground are a set of Pirelli P Zero Corsas specifically designed for the supercar. Add on Ferrari’s Dynamic Enhancer for stability under braking, and the Daytona SP3 is quite handy around a racetrack.
Poster-worthy Looks
What’s a Ferrari without looks worthy of a bedroom poster? The Daytona SP3 ticks off those boxes with a slick body that’s nicely shrink-wrapped to make the curves more apparent. Ferrari claims it’s the most aerodynamically efficient design from them, and that’s without any active aero elements. It also gets styling bits inspired from the race cars it honours, with the wraparound windscreen similar to the 330 P3. The stacked front wing setup is similar to the 512 S.
But what really caught our eyes was at the rear, with the sleek horizontal bars for the taillights. Below it is a chunky diffuser with centrally mounted dual exhaust tips making up the design.
Driver-focused Cabin
Open the butterfly doors, and you’re treated to a cabin that’s clearly focused on the driver. The integrated seats have enough of a recline that Ferrari compares it to a single-seater setup, which contributes to the supercar being just 1142mm tall, which does help in reducing drag.
Exclusivity
Since it is Ferrari’s third Icona model after the SP1 and SP2, the Daytona SP3 will be a limited-run model. Only 599 units are being made, with each unit costing a sky high 2 million euros (or approx. Rs 16.79 crore, excluding taxes).
