NikilSJ I dont think there is a way to make the diesel engines cleaner AND more powerful. As far as I know the cars that were recalled, were re-flashed with a new ECU setup, which obviously had a lower power rating to allow for lower emissions.

Roshun yes, I guess VW is working on improving the 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre diesel engines. Along with cleaner emissions, the updated engines are likely to get a boost in power too. Some websites have said it the 1.5-litre TDI engine may now churn out 109 PS of power instead of the current 104 PS. But a story done by CarDekho back in May says that even the updated engine won't meet BS VI emission norms and instead will only be BS IV compliant. The updated engines are likely to find a place under the hood of the Vento, Polo and Ameo by October, the report adds.
Volkswagen has reportedly agreed to pay a compensation/fine somewhere in the whereabouts of $10 billion to settle claims with its customers in the US. If this deal is accepted by US authorities, then VW will have to compensate each customer affected by the ‘Dieselgate’ scam between $1,000 to $7,000 depending the car’s date of manufacturing and other ‘factors’. The average compensation for each customer is estimated at $5,000 and VW may have to buy back the affected cars too (close to 5 lakh cars were reported to be affected by the scam). In addition, VW has agreed to pay $4 billion towards damages to the environment that their diesel cars caused to the US. The German automaker is facing similar allegations in other countries too and would have to deal with them separately which could cost the company a fortune. The final hearing of the said settlement will take place in a US court on July 26, 2016. Watch this space to find out how much this deal will affect VW’s fortunes around the world.
That is a serious amount of money that VW will have to fork out. The company has temporarily stopped selling the diesel variants of the Polo and even the newly launched Ameo comes only in petrol for now. This temporary stoppage is to get around to the new emission norms and make the necessary changes to its diesel engine. Probably, that was the engine being tested that we saw in the VW Polo that we spied testing on the Mumbai-Pune expressway.
