Q.Mahindra "Intelli-Hybrid" Scorpio Launched

So we have to wait to see if Mahindra is planning to pass it on to the customer. If did, many prople who is willing to upgrade to c segment sedan will have another option added to their shortlisted vehicles with budget.

Integrated starter generator and brake energy regeneration is what the SHVS from Suzuki in Ciaz and Ertiga do. Hopefully Mahindra's IntelliHybrid should also do the same. It would be better if this boosts the efficiency of the engine marginally. Both in performance and mileage.

Under the NEMMP [National Electric Mobility Mission Plan], the central govt offers tax incentives for hybrid cars. Mahindra had made use of these incentives and offset the additional cost. Great move, I say.

Mahindra has announced the pricing for the top-end S10 variant of the Intelli-Hybrid equipped Scorpio. Priced at Rs 12.84 lakh (ex-showroom, Navi-Mumbai), the S10 variant just costs about the same as the regular S10 2.2-litre mHawk 2WD variant. Mahindra claims fuel consumption has improved by up to 7 percent thanks to features such as an auto-start stop, brake energy recuperation, a larger capacity battery and a starter motor which functions as both an alternator and a motor that provides a mild electric boost in certain driving conditions.

Hats off to Mahindra for coming up with innovative solutions to counter all kinds of hurdles that are placed in their way. Other Indian manufacturers should probably learn a thing or two from them. The way Mahindra has progressed in the last decade is nothing short of incredible. However, I do hope they bring in all the tech from their Formula-E cars and Reva to their mass market products soon. The technology should not just be limited to the higher-end of their product lineup but should trickle down to the KUV100 and TUV300 as well as they are two of the most popular cars for Mahindra currently.

Mahindra has already introduced a part of this technology with the new Mahindra XUV500. The W10 variant has 'brake energy regeneration' - which is nothing but an "intelligent" alternator that charges the battery even when decelerating, and disconnects on acceleration for better fuel efficiency. Some used to call this technology "intelligent alternator management". Nothing revolutionary with it. It features a starter generator that is connected via a belt to the engine instead of an alternator. This system can provide a boost to the engine on acceleration, allowing for better fuel efficiency and on decelerating will put power back into the battery. It will feature a start-stop system of course as standard. If there is a road block to selling it because of engine capacity, the system can easily be adapted to the 1.99 litre engine, as the changes are all external only - no change needed to the internals of the engine.

But it won't be very hard to implement this system in the 1.99 I think. Maybe they are just finishing up on the 2.2 and will start working on the smaller engine later. Mahindra, the only Indian manufacturer who has taken a keen interest in Electric cars, is all set to introduce a hybrid system on its current line-up of cars. The Scorpio will be the first to be available with the new mild hybrid system. It is currently being dubbed as the 'Intelli-Hybrid' and should be a big step forward from the current "Micro-Hybrid" used by Mahindra. [B]UPDATE : [/B]The new system is available on all manual gearbox equipped variants using the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine. The [B]Scorpio Intelli-Hybrid[/B] has been launched at a price of [B]Rs 12.84 lakh (ex-showroom, Navi Mumbai)[/B] for the top S10 2WD variant. Currently, the system only has the auto start-stop function which has now become an age old technology. The tech in the "Intelli-Hybrid" is said to use a larger battery and deliver more hybrid-like features such as brake energy recuperation and an integrated starter motor. This motor will have two roles to play - act as the alternator to charge the battery and also provide a "mild" electric boost to the engine in certain driving conditions. However, it will NOT be capable of all-electric running. Expect more Mahindra models to come equipped with this technology in future.
