Q.Maruti Suzuki IGNIS to be launched during Diwali
866 Views Add Comment68 CommentsNikil | 7 years agoThe IGNIS will be the first Maruti Suzuki product to be launched in 2017. A report from Autocar India has revealed that the car will be launched on the 13th of January. The report also says that the IGNIS will be placed below the Swift in terms of pricing and as a replacement for the Ritz.
Nikil | 8 years agoSome more information on the IGNIS here: The IGNIS is set to come with a Harman Kardon audio system, the first for any model from Maruti Suzuki. This system will support Apple Car Play. No word yet on if this system will support Android Auto as well. One report I recently read said the IGNIS coul be priced between Rs 5.5 lakh and Rs 7.3 lakh for the top-end fully loaded version.
Kaiserketkar | 8 years ago
NikilSJ Hi dear, Can you give me advice? I want to book a Maurti Suzuki Wagon R Automatic, but should I book Wagon R right now or wait for the upcoming Suzuki Ignis? What are the differences between the two and which one will be more economical (mileage and price)? And when will the Ignis be launched in India?
I'd say go for the Wagon R Automatic. This Ignis is still some time away from launch and even when it launches, as is common with Suzukis, there'll be a waiting list for it... so that'll mean an additional waiting period after the launch. Plus, like Jijo said, price wise, it looks like it'll fit above the Wagon R. The Wagon R will serve your purpose just fine. Plus, there's always the advantage of having a tried and trusted workhorse. Differences wise, the Ignis is likely to be better loaded with more features than the Wagon R, it will also have the bigger engine under the hood making ~15 bhp more than the Wagon R. The mileage however, will be comparable between the two cars. If you don't mind waiting for a month or two, you might want to wait for the year end discounts, if any- which will get your the Wagon R at an even better price.

What are the differences between the two and which one will be more economical (mileage and price)? And when will the Ignis be launched in India? [/QUOTE_NODE] The Ignis will only be launched by the end of this year or early-2017. The Ignis will get 1.2-litre petrol motor and 1.3-litre diesel motor. If you are not inclined in getting a diesel car, then I think the Wagon-R will do just fine. The space on offer in the Wagon-R is good, the petrol motor being a 1.0-litre unit will, in turn, return you more fuel efficiency. And Ignis which is touted to replace the Ritz in India will certainly be more expensive than the Wagon-R, probably starting at around Rs 4.75 lakh (ex-showroom) in India for the base manual petrol variant. On the other hand, the Wagon-R Vxi (Auto) will only cost you Rs 4.75 (ex-showroom).
Arvind | 8 years agoNikilSJ So, the Maruti Ignis with a CVT box makes good sense. Then will the Indian spec Ignis will look like what i have posted above?? I mean the colour options and any info about the CVT??
Nikil | 8 years agoThe Maruti Suzuki IGNIS, a popular automotive website reports, is likely to be launched with a premium price tag starting at Rs 5.5 lakh. The IGNIS will square off against the Mahindra KUV100. Indirect competitors in the compact SUV segment include the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra TUV300, Fiat Avventura, Fiat Urban Cross and Hyundai i20 Activ. The IGNIS, this report says, will come with a modified version of the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine from the Swift and the Baleno. The diesel version will be powered by the tried and tested 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine. However, what caught my attention was that this report says that the IGNIS will come with a manual and a CVT box! Now, a couple of months back, a little birdie told us that the IGNIS would only get the AMT version. I was disheartened when I heard it. So this definitely comes as good news to me.
Nikil | 8 years agoArvind Fluidic the pictures that GaadiWaadi seems to have got their hands on seem to be that of the Japanese-spec IGNIS in India. The Japanese-spec IGNIS gets a 1,242cc K12C DualJet engine with VVT (91PS and 118Nm) along with a DC synchonous motor (3.1PS and 50Nm). While other reports say that this engine will not make its way to India, I think this car was brought to India in this specification for R&D purposes, probably as a test bed for a launch later in the product's lifecycle. Most reports say that the IGNIS will continue to use to the K12 engine from the Swift and Baleno as only that engine qualifies for excise duties but now with these pictures, I think there is enough proof that that Maruti Suzuki may be planning to introduce this hybrid powertrain under the government's FAME scheme. As far as the gearbox is confirmed, one of our sources from Nexa had told us earlier that only the AMT version will be launched and not the CVT. However, if they launch this Hybrid version, then only the CVT can be used. I hope it is the Japanese-spec engine that finally arrives in our country and the AMT version is not that fun to drive.
Arvind | 8 years agoGaadiWaadi has posted a set of 20 images on the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Ignis in its website, which reveals one of the top spec variant, though not the exact top end variant. This is further supported by the fact that the car in the spy images doesnt have the Projector headlights, LED daytime running lights and the front fog lamps!!! But what is evident from these images is that a Hybrid variant will also be on offer with the Ignis upon its launch (or on a later stage) as the car has Hybrid badges on its body. But whether the Hybrid is the normal SHVS (as found in Ciaz and Brezza) or full time Hybrid is not known at this time. Maruti can also up the ante and surprise everyone by offering a full time hybrid variant as an option in the Ignis, though prices will be very high. The website also posted the interior, which reveals the car may come with an automatic transmission (possibily a 4 or 5 speed auto) and not an AMT transmission. But as per various reports, an AMT may be offered at a later stage. As with every other maruti's the USP of the Ignis will be its SHVS or Hybrid technology among other features. Rhythem | 8 years agoNikilSJ Same here man. Waiting for this to launch next year. Anything about the Ignis variants and the price range?
Nikil | 8 years agoIf you’ve been following this thread, then you might have noticed how eager I have been for the IGNIS’ launch in India. I really love the way it looks and was overjoyed when Maruti Suzuki previewed it at the 2016 Auto Expo. Yes, it wasn’t as big as I thought it would be and won’t come with the all-wheel drive system that it comes with in Europe and Japan. But I’ve gotten over it because to my eyes, it looks like nothing else on the road - quite like the feeling we all got when the Swift was first launched in India. As some of you may know, the IGNIS was launched in Europe a couple of weeks ago. Suzuki also released a press release stating the design inspiration for the IGNIS. Take a look below to find out what all design cues have been borrowed from the Suzuki’s older cars. The absurd Adidas logo-like C-Pillar vents The slits on the IGNIS’ C-Pillars are apparently a nod to the Giugiaro-designed Fronte Coupe - Japan’s first mini sports car sold way back in 1971. Giugiaro is one of my favourite car designers of all time. The only reason I convinced my parents to buy the Punto was because of those gorgeous lines penned by the Italian. These slits on the IGNIS seems to me like a nod to the artist that is Giuragio. The headlamps placed inside the grille The IGNIS’ projector units are placed within the grille, something that was first seen in the Suzuki Cervo mini sports car from Japan from 1977. The Cervo was the Fronte Coupe’s successor and was another suzuki designed by Guigario. Blacked-out A-Pillar The first car that I remember came with a blacked-out A-Pillar in our country was the Suzuki Swift and the blacked-out pillars in the IGNIS seem to have been nicked from the Swift that was introduced in India in May 2005. Clamshell bonnet This is a styling feature that you normally see only in SUVs. These days, quite a lot of SUVs seem to come with this design feature as standard. For the IGNIS, Suzuki says they looked at the first generation Vitara that was introduced in Japan in 1988 for inspiration. The current Suzuki Vitara sold abroad too has the same design identity although the Vitara Brezza sold in India does not. All-in-all, I think the IGNIS’ is a good looking hatchback inspite of being a tall boy. It sort of reminds me of the Wagon R when it was first launched in India. I am still not sure if the general public will take a liking to the design as most of the time all the oddball designs that I have come to like over the years were all abandoned and scoffed at by majority of the car buyers in the country. What do you think of the IGNIS’ design? Oddball or a winner?
Arjun | 8 years agoKaiserketkar Its said beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, and I believe it somewhat applies for weird or wackyness too. Though I agree that the Ignis is a weird design, but I find the KUV100 way more weird. However, over time these designs grow on us. The E2O, for example looked very weird when it was launched but over time it has slowly started to feel more balanced. The designers are always challenged to keep it mellowed down or wacky. If its too mellowed down, it may end up like the Verito or Etios, where people find it too boring. If its too wacky, it goes another way, like many couldn't accept the rear design of the Brio. Sometimes the weird ones fare well. The Ecosport is a good example for this. Earlier Maruti has launched the Zen Classic which was another weird car. Being a Maruti, the design would be the least of their bothers. As far as the badge is there they may succeed.
Kaiserketkar | 8 years agoI really don't understand why MS tends to make odd looking cars. [Although I must admit that recent launches from Maruti Suzuki have been fairly good looking including- specifically the Vitara Brezza and the Baleno.] As it is a challenge to design SUVs in the sub-compact category, where the bulk and the height don't have a compatible length to go with. Mahindra didn't quite get it with the Quanto/ Nuvosport but did a fairly decent job with the Tuv300 / KUV100 siblings. Except from specific angles, these SUVs look quite nice and butch. the Ecosport looks more civilized but still has SUV elements and looks the part. the Ignis on the other hand, looks like a toy car with no sense of proportion. It does certainly remain to be seen, how it really looks in person, but I doubt my opinion will change much even then. Here is a comparison of the 3 SUVs to compare and contrast:
Jijo | 8 years ago[QUOTE_NODE]"Originally posted by Roshun" JijoMalayil No, the Ignis would likely be priced from about Rs. 4.75 lakh upwards. Maruti would not want to eat into Celerio and Wagon-R territory with the Ignis. It will co-exist with the Maruti Swift, at probably a slightly lower price band - about Rs. 20k less variant for variant with the Swift. That segment will offer buyers a choice of three body styles then - the Baleno, the Swift and the Ignis. It will be the car that will take the fight to the Mahindra KUV100. [/QUOTE_NODE] Only Maruti Suzuki can pull off this stunt of launching different products in the same segment and price range, and still be able to manage enough sales figures. I am still a little sceptical about the prospects of Ignis in India with the great VFM Baleno (upcoming Baleno RS) and the soon to be launched next-gen Swift priced (to be) priced in close proximity of each other.

Jijo | 8 years ago[QUOTE_NODE]"Originally posted by NikilSJ" I like the chrome stripes and the metallic portion around the grille finished in white. This car has a lot of potential for cosmetic updates. I hope Maruti offers a lot of customisation kits for the Ignis when launched so that customers can make their Ignis their own with a personalised design. India will definitely not get the AllGrip system and that is a bummer. [/QUOTE_NODE] I have a feeling that Maruti Suzuki will replace that metallic portion in white with chrome when they bring it to India. Am just really curious about the price point it would be launched at, considering that the Ignis will replace the Ritz in India. Starting at Rs 4 lakh?

India will definitely not get the AllGrip system and that is a bummer. The AWD system would have made it a hoot to drive, especially on bad roads and dirt tracks that you find across the country. Still, at least this thing is coming to India and that in itself is quite a relief.
Jijo | 8 years agoSuzuki has showcased the Ignis for Europe at the ongoing Paris Auto Show, which is scheduled to be launched in January 2017. Seen are full-LED headlamps! Ignis is powered 1.2-litre DUALJET petrol engine with SHVS system. The motor is expected to make around 90 PS and 120 Nm of torque. The motor will be mated to a 5-speed manual and AMT (AGS) transmissions. Ignis for Europe will also get Suzuki's ALLGRIP 4WD system. Not likely to make it to India though :(
Jijo | 8 years agoThe interiors of a mid-level trim of the Suzuki Ignis was spotted while testing in India. Looks pretty much similar to the one sold in the international markets. A 2-DIN music system with physical controls and buttons are seen. We expect the top trim level Ignis is to feature a fully-touchscreen SmartPlay entertainment system. Kaiserketkar | 8 years agoExactly. Even the Kwid with smaller dimensions has the butch looks, and although it may not look like an SUV, it at least looks like a muscular hatchback. Full marks to Renault for managing to give it a micro Duster appearance. But knowing Maruti Suzuki, in all probability, all you'll get in the name of a micro SUV, will be quirky looks and a car that's neither here nor there. To their credit, however, they did manage a decent job on the looks of the Brezza. Although it still has compact dimensions, it does look quite good. You're right, it'll probably be a upgrade or maybe a substitute to the Wagon R or the Ritz, However if it's positioned as a micro-SUV, it'll be priced in the Swift price range. So a comparison with the Swift is natural.
Arjun | 8 years agoKaiserketkar To me it just looks like a replacement or contender for the Wagon R or Celerio. The Ignis is small as you mentioned and just seems to be a Wagon R on stilts. The ground clearance may be high, but as you mentioned it has no SUV looks like the KUV. I feel even the Kwid has better SUVish looks than the Ignis in spite of being smaller. However, this would be a good upgrade over the Wagon R or even may replace the Ritz, and in my opinion shouldn't be compared with the Swift.
Kaiserketkar | 8 years ago
Upcoming Suzuki Ignis caught being tested on Delhi roads. Looks quite narrow, right? There is no confirmation on the possible launch date. Looks like we might have to wait for early-2017 to get our hands on one! [youtube_video]https://youtube.com/watch?v=1pJ46y5yrag[/youtube_video]
Rather narrow! Here's a screengrab of the video you posted, where it's right next to a Swift. It's just as tall as a Swift and considerably narrower than it. All this might mean a cramped 2nd row and it might be comfortable only as a 4 seater. The challenge before the reigning king of Hatchbacks, Maruti-Suzuki will be to ensure that it doesn't look like a hatch back. Unfortunately from the photo that Arvind Fluidic has put up, it doesn't really look butch enough. The Ecosport and the KUV100 both managed to look like SUVs, they did have that certain muscular look. It remains to be seen if the Ignis does look the part in person.

Arvind | 8 years agoMaruti Suzuki is all set to launch a crossover vehicle(as maruti calls it) in the Indian market, the Ignis, which is a direct competition to the Mahindra KUV300. To begin with, It’s a compact crossover – it’s got tall & peppered with SUV cues here and there, most prominently the big wheel arches. Maruti has steered clear of over-the-top styling, and gone, instead with finding beauty in proportions. The nose is beautifully composed, with an integrated grille-and-headlight cluster, the roof rails and wheel arches are very SUV-like, and the rear is retro-styled, in reference to the Suzukis of yesteryears. While the car may be all-new, it is widely expected to be powered by a modified version of the 1.2-litre K-series petrol engine that currently powers the Swift and the Baleno, as well as the 75hp 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine. It is also expected that it will be offered with an automatic option, though the automatic gearbox will be a CVT and not an AMT. The Ignis can be compact from the outside, but is surprisingly roomy on the inside. The seats are space-efficient, rear legroom is good which is made better by the space created under the front seat, the dash is neatly designed and features a modern tablet along with a retro air-con controller and the steering is all-new, as opposed to the Swift steering found in most Maruti cars today. Looks like Maruti has a winner in its hands.. Image:Autocar.

Vidit | 8 years agoGaadiWaadi got another picture of the Ignis doing some testing closer to its launch date. From the looks of it, this one looks like the top-end model with those gloss 15 inch alloys and roof rails.

Motu | 8 years ago
There have been new talks or rumours that contradict the previous rumour about the launch of the Maruti Ignis
Stuff like this is why I wish Maruti was more active in terms of PR. They have been improving in terms of social media communication and customer response, but good lord are they archaic in comparison to some other companies - Ford for example. Nip these stupid rumours in the bud in the first place - or are they trying to cash in on the stupid 'any publicity is good publicity crap'?
JOY | 8 years agoThere has been new talks or rumours that contradicts another rumour about the launch of the Maruti Ignis been postponed to early next year. Some say ;) that Maruti Suzuki has confirmed that the Ignis will be launched during this festive season via their premium dealership 'NEXA' only. Regarding the backlog of the Baleno and the Vitara Brezza orders,Maruti Suzuki has reportedly claimed that they will be able to match sales demand by early 2017 with the Gujarat plant starting operations in full swing, thus reducing the waiting periods of these models. Nikil | 8 years agoMotuSid damn! This breaks my heart. This news just makes me want to ditch my plans of getting an IGNIS and just go for the Tata Tiago instead. I'd save a couple of rupees too which I could probably use for some performance upgrades. The only thing is I'm still not quite confident about going for a Tata product. While they say they have improved their service experience, I am still looking for some solid evidence of the same. The sad part is none of the other cars get me excited the way the IGNIS and the Tiago do. All of you out there, do you have any other suggestions for an affordable fun-to-drive hatchback that won't cost an arm and a leg in the long run?
Motu | 8 years ago
And now we hear that Maruti is pushing back the launch of the Ignis
Damn, hear that NikilSJ? Maruti has got to get their plant in Gujarat up and running fast, people will start losing patience otherwise - and the competition is waiting to pounce.
Roshun | 8 years agoKaiserketkar And now we hear that Maruti is pushing back the launch of the Ignis to focus on getting its production up to speed with the Baleno and Vitara Brezza. The bookings it has for these two cars is pretty huge, and the waiting period is a minimum 4-5 months for the former and up to 9 months for the latter. Both the cars have over 100,000 bookings now. An ET report says Maruti will first fulfil all these pending orders before launching the Ignis. So no festive seaon launch for the Ignis. Expect it to be early next year now. This, they say, is to try and undercut the hot-selling Mahindra KUV100 in pricing. The good news is that the AMT gearbox will be available in both the petrol and diesel variants. The bad news, at least for me, is the fact that the CVT from the Baleno won't make it to the IGNIS. The article says that Maruti Suzuki believes that equipping the IGNIS with an AMT will also narrow down the price difference between the manual and the auto variant, thus making the latter more appealing for buyers looking for a good city runabout. All my hopes of the IGNIS getting a CVT seems to be dashed now. What a bummer!
I was a little surprised that the Ignis would come with a CVT. Considering the cut throat price that the Ignis would ideall need for it to be successful, an AMT would make the most sense. Cheaper to manufacture, cheaper to run, cheaper to maintain.

Kaiserketkar | 8 years ago
It will only have some of the SUV looks and the ground clearance, but it's essentially a hatchback.
.... a hatchback on protein supplements! ;)
Roshun | 8 years agoLooking at the bookings that the Mahindra KUV100 is chalking up, Maruti will definitely push the Ignis launch as soon as possible. Marketing it as a micro SUV will work with the Indian audience. No way will it get all-wheel drive. It will only have some of the SUV looks and the ground clearance, but it's essentially a hatchback.
Kaiserketkar | 8 years agoWell, I doubt they'll skimp features... but the all wheel drive isn't really for Indian SUV buyers. Most of us satisfy our offroading urges by driving in potholes and over pavements :D Most of the MicroSUV customers will view it as an upgrade to hatches.
Nikil | 8 years agokaiserketkar while they give the IGNIS a killer pricing, I hope they don't skimp on features. It's already known that it won;t come in the all-wheel drive guise like in Japan. That in itself, at least to me, is a big miss. I hope it'll be easy to export kits from Japan.
Kaiserketkar | 8 years agoThe Micro-SUV segment will heat up in the coming months. Competition is a wonderful thing! I hope Suzuki learn their lessons from the Brezza/ S-cross experiences and give it a killer sticker price!
Nikil | 8 years agoTest mules of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki IGNIS has been spied yet again courtesy Rushlane reader Abhinav Jain. The compact crossover is likely to be launched in the festive season. The prototypes were sporting temporary panels although the manufacturer had preview the IGNIS during the 2016 Auto Expo. When launched, expect most of the design to remain the same. The spy shots also give a peak into the interior which will be identical to the one seen on the IGNIS during the Auto Expo. The IGNIS will sport a dual-tone dashboard with a freestanding SmartPlay display and unique HVAC controls. Hopefully, the steering wheel won’t be the same as the Swift’s and instead would be an all-new design. If rumours are to be believed, the IGNIS petrol variant could come with a CVT option as well. Nikil | 8 years ago
I think Maruti will reserve the Boosterjet for the Baleno RS and the Brezza. The Baleno RS would be Maruti's "Hot hatch" variant to compete with the VW GT TSI Polo. The Boosterjet engine in the Brezza would make it a competent petrol performer to rival the likes of the Ford EcoSport Ecoboost. As for the Ignis, I think positioning it as a "Micro SUV" on the lines of Mahindra's KUV100 will work in its favour. It is quite possible that it may get a CVT and not an AMT - because right now Maruti uses the AMT with the 1 litre K Series engine in the Celerio, Wagon-R and Alto K10. With the 1.2 K Series it uses the CVT - as seen in the Baleno, and so it may use the same engine-transmission combination for the Ignis too. Maruti also uses an AMT box for the diesel 1.3 multi-jet (as seen in the Dzire AMT and upcoming Maruti Swift diesel automatic), which could be a possibility on the Ignis too if we are talking AMTs.
I really hope the IGNIS does well. If priced right, I have a feeling it can easily topple the KUV100. Maruti using the AMT box for the 1.3-litre DDiS engine at a later date is a given. But if they use the CVT in the IGNIS, then they might as well use it in the next-generation Swift as well.
Roshun | 8 years ago
Here's what my source told me - Ignis will be launched in September 2016 for sure, NEXA representatives will be sent for training in August-end or early-September (to some exotic location, he added - most probably Goa. So friends in Goa, keep an eye out). It replaces the Ritz and will be placed under or on par with the Swift - but will be sold through NEXA, maybe as a 'Premium Mini-SUV'. We know that Maruti is trying to spoil the party for Mahindra, 4500 units of the KUV100 have been dispatched to dealers on an average since it was launched in the market. That's all folks!

Nikil | 8 years agoIn other news, Maruti Suzuki has already started work on its third plant. The new facility outside Ahmedabad, Gujarat is likely to go online from early 2017. Maruti Suzuki says this facility will have an annual production capacity of 2.5 lkah units. The car maker's Gurgaon and Manesar plants on the other hand contribute 17.5 lakh units per year. The new plant is being set up with an investment of Rs 3,000 crore and will cater to both the domestic and international markets. Key products that could be manufactured here include

Baleno
Baleno RS
IGNIS
Next-gen Swift
Next-gen Swift DZire
MotuSid has more news on Maruti Suzuki's plans for the remainder of the year from his source.
Nikil | 8 years agoMotuSid, through a reliable source of his, has found out that the IGNIS will indeed be launched in October and will come with two engine options - the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine and the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine. This source confirmed that the IGNIS will be priced in the same range as the Swift. The IGNIS is set to replace the Ritz in our market. The Ritz was apparently discontinued two months ago but not many have reported it and hence not many people know about it. But back to the IGNIS, the crossover hatchback will only come with a manual option at the time of launch. Maruti Suzuki may add an automatic variant later in the year or early next year, but our source isn't sure if the IGNIS would get the CVT gearbox from the Baleno or the now regular AMT 'box from the Swift DZire. I really do hope it is the CVT that comes with the IGNIS. The IGNIS could be the last offering from Maruti for this year and I just can't wait for the manufacturer to announce the price. The IGNIS' primary rival would be the Mahindra KUV100 which has been selling like hot cakes since it was launched. I really do hope the IGNIS feels more premium than the KUV100 and that Maruti uses quality materials on the inside.
Nikil | 8 years agoWoah, that's good news. AMT would have never really gone well with the Nexa brand anyway. I am just waiting for two more details to emerge - one is what petrol engine will they offer (most likely it will be the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol :( only) and second is the pricing - I hope it will be priced the same as the Swift or maybe even lower. And like you said, the CVT may only come with the petrol option.
Jijo | 8 years agoAutocar India reports that, Maruti will offer a CVT and not an AMT as an automatic gearbox option for the Ignis. Like seen in Maruti Baleno, the CVT option is likely to be exclusive to the petrol variant.
Nikil | 8 years agoMaruti Suzuki's upcoming IGNIS has been spotted testing again, this time by Motortrend India. It is expected to be launched around the festive season. Unlike the Japanese-spec IGNIS, the Indian version will have a chrome-accentuated grille, slight design tweaks and roof rails. The India-spec IGNIS will be powered by the 1.2-litre K12B engine with VVT and the 1.3-litre DDiS engine with SHVS mild hybrid technology. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual. A CVT is also likely to be offered in the petrol variant. The IGNIS will rival the likes of the Mahindra KUV100 and Tata’s upcoming Tiago Aktiv. Expect it to be priced between Rs 4.5 to Rs 7 lakh depending on the variant and trim levels.

Jijo | 8 years agoNikilSJ Apart from boot space. It will be a more spacious car than a Swift. Swift's rear is as cramped as it can get! :(
Nikil | 8 years agoJijoMalayil I don't think it'll be a more practical car than the Swift although, like you said, it will be a good replacement for the ageing Ritz. Even I hope the keep the interiors of the Japanese version intact for India. MotuSid, yes we do. My collection is afterall increasing with my latest 'acquisition'
Motu | 8 years ago
However, the only problem I find with the IGNIS is the small boot. At 133 litres, it is too small even for a weekend trip to Kasol-Malana :p
Oh yes, we need a bigger boot to store the 'parts' we pick up along the way don't we!
Jijo | 8 years agoIGNIS will be an apt replacement to the Ritz, which in all probability will be phased out this year. Definitely more practical than a Swift, boot space is a concern though! I just love the interiors, i hope Maruti doesn't skimp on that! I still don't understand Suzuki's Nexa philosophy. Why would they sell the cheaper IGNIS through Nexa?
Nikil | 8 years agoRoshun that's me in a nutshell :p Looking forward to see how Maruti prices the car and equipment they will offer. However, the only problem I find with the IGNIS is the small boot. At 133 litres, it is too small even for a weekend trip to Kasol-Malana :p
Roshun | 8 years agoHere's what I think the Ignis will finally come out at. No four wheel drive. (Sorry MotuSid , but that's just what makes business sense). If the car is going after the micro SUV segment (which is what the Mahindra KUV100 is), it will be built to a cost, and will offer features at par with what the competition offers. It will slot in alongside the Ritz (or may be the Ritz will be discontinued itself). The focus would be on lifestyle buyers who want a micro SUV, don't want to settle for a hatch. And don't want to spend more to pick a Brezza.
Praveen | 8 years agoNikilSJ The design is fine in my opinion. A bit quirky at the rear, for sure, but not too much to put off prospective buyers. I'm pretty confident it would do well, considering they launch the 4WD Hybrid variant when the Indian market is matured enough, which I'm sure would happen within the next five-six years tops.
Nikil | 8 years agoHahaha Praveen well if that happens, Maruti can have all the leaves from my chequebook as well. But do you think the IGNIS' design will appeal to car buyers here?
Praveen | 8 years agoNikilSJ If the Japanese spec Ignis Hybrid MZ, by any miracle comes to India (retaining most of the features), it would be the ideal all-season small car. First car buyers looking for practicality would find this car very appealing. Four wheel drive hatchback with good mileage? Shut up and take my money already!
Nikil | 8 years agoMotuSid I feel the same. I don't want it to end up like the A-Star even though my gut says it will. Even I like the fact that Suzuki has retained most of the concept's design elements. I would really consider buying the IGNIS if it is offered with all-wheel drive. But we know how the folks at Maruti work, don't we :( But more than the manufacturer, will car buyers here warm to its design. We like quirky cars, but the majority of car buyers in our country play it safe when it comes to picking up a car. They'll immediately think about resale value and all that stuff that doesn't matter while considering the IGNIS. It is high time some manufacturer gave us enthusiasts what we've been craving for a long time, that is a fun driving car with quirky looks, under the Rs 10 lakh price bracket. But as it stands, I think the IGNIS has got what it takes to beat Mahindra's KUV100.
Motu | 8 years agoI wish Maruti doesn't screw up with the Ignis. I have been in love with this car ever since I saw the concept - and I appreciate the fact that Suzuki has stuck close to the concept design - remember the disaster that was the A-Star? The only thing that remains, is to see if the people at Maruti can be as open about the Ignis as the people at Suzuki Japan have been. Allow it to be quirky, make it exciting, make it crazy (please offer the AWD - just for the kicks). Don't let the morons in the costing department tell you to make the Ignis another commuter because it needs to make business sense. PLEASE MARUTI, I IMPLORE YOU! You can do it! YES YOU CAN! Nikil | 8 years agoHere's a couple of screenshots of the press release Suzuki put out when the IGNIS was launched in Japan. Note: The engine and most of the features of the Japanese-spec will not make it to India. The purpose of this post is to show you how much we will lose out on thanks to Maruti's mission to cut costs drastically. Nikil | 8 years agoPowertrain As I mentioned earlier, the IGNIS in Japan comes with a1.2-litre DUALJET petrol engine with SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) technology. But Maruti is like to ditch this power plant for the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine and the 1.3-litre DDiS 200 diesel engine (which is essentially the 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel engine produced by Fiat) to keep costs low. In Japan, the IGNIS is available in 4WD and 2WD configuration, but India is like to get the latter, again in the name of cost-cutting. The 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbocharged petrol could also find a place under the hood of the IGNIS. The 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine The 1.3-litre DDiS turbocharged diesel In terms of transmission, the Japanese version comes with either a 5-sped manual or a CVT automatic gearbox. For India, expect Maruti to equip the IGNIS with the 5-speed manual. While the Baleno, does come with a CVT now, the IGNIS may not be available with this option. Instead, it may come with an AMT option. In terms of competition, the IGNIS’ primary rivals would be Mahindra’s KUV100, TUV300, Ford’s EcoSport, Fiat’s Punto Avventura other than Maruti’s own Vitara Brezza. But the closest competitor for the IGNIS would be Mahindra’s KUV100. With bookings for the KUV100 crossing the 75,000 mark, can the IGNIS steal Mahindra’s show. Let’s take a look. The KUV100's mFalcon G80 naturally aspirated petrol engine The mFalcon D70 diesel engine that powers the KUV100

Nikil | 8 years ago
I have a question - What does Maruti plan to achieve by introducing cars one after the other in the same/similar segment? If I am not mistaken, they already have about 12 models in the price range of 4-10 lakhs! I do think the Ignis is a good product, but launching this could result in one of two scenarios. One, soon after it's launch there could be huge demand for it and long waiting periods - this would directly result in lower sales for their other models such as the Swift or WagonR. Two, the car fails to have any differentiating factor for it's price and fails completely (as seen with the Vitara and Kizashi).
CorsaVeloce for sheer dominance :P ! If you ask me, even I have no clue why Maruti does this. But if you think about it, if a customer is not interested in the Swift, he'll probably go for a Ritz or a Baleno depending on his budget. In any case it is a win-win for Maruti as Indian car buyers are unwilling to look beyond the "most trusted brand" in the market. Also, don't you think it gives more options to the customers? If you ask me, I never liked the 2nd generation Swift. nor do I like the Ritz. The Baleno is out of my league and if I want a Nexa product within my budget, I guess the Ignis (when launched) is the only viable option.
Nikil | 8 years agoExterior Design The IGNIS is based on the Concept iM-4 that was previewed at the Geneva Motor Show in 2014. The 3,700mm-long IGNIS will benefit from the lower excise duty applicable for sub-4 metre cars. However, the IGNIS’s design will not be to everyone’s taste. To go with the crossover tag, Suzuki has given the IGNIS a very boxy design, it’s all straight lines and soft curves here. Suzuki has managed to retain most of the iM-4 concept's (below) design cues for the IGNIS. Image source: inautonews.com The Concept iM-4 looks a lot like a Stormtrooper from Star Wars doesn't it? The Concept iM-4's LED headlamps have been replaced by conventional units but the LED pilot lamps have been retained. The bubble roof has been flattened a bit along with the addition of roof rails. At the rear, the Concept iM-4's single-piece tail lamps have been replaced by twin units, but the rest of the design remains. At the front, the IGNIS gets a clean and chunky design. The grille gets a chrome surround and extends across the width of the car and also accommodates the headlamps. The IGNIS gets projector headlamps with a neat U-shaped LED pilot lamp. A closer look at the LED guide lights on the IGNIS. The top-end variant will come equipped with projector headlamps as well. A closer look at the front reveals the chrome strip surrounding the entire grille. The bumpers are flat and chunky and houses the fog lamps which a get chrome surround. The bonnet is flat and there are no muscular lines or bulges on it. The windshield washers are placed on the bonnet although I feel it could have been hidden from view at the base on the front windshield. The side profile of the IGNIS is probably the most interesting part of its design. Starting from the base of the crossover, the IGNIS gets wheel arches that bulge out. The ship shoulder line that starts from the front headline and goes all the way through the side and rises up where rear window ends gives the side a bit of character. The IGNIS will come with 16-inch wheels on the top-end variant and 15-inch wheels on the lower and middle variant. The pull-type door handles are finished in chrome in the top-end variant. Other variants get body-coloured door handles. The C-Pillar gets a faux grille that looks like a shark’s gills. This design element apparently harks back to the Suzuki Cervo, a small Japanese kei car which made its way to the UK later and came to be called as the Suzuki SC1000 also known as the Whizkid. Image courtesy: jalopnik.com The rear of the design will certainly split opinions. Some might call it dumpy looking while others would say it’s a nod to Suzuki cars of the late 80s and early 90s. To my eyes, the rear windows look like ones on the first-generation Maruti 800 and I find it quite cool that Suzuki has been quite daring in getting this design into production. The tail lamps are LED units and extend into the boot lid. The numberplate sits in a recessed area under a large Suzuki ’S’ badge. Like the front bumper, the rear ones too are chunky. It also gets a blacked out portion right in the middle that extends across its width and also houses the rear fog lamps. But overall, there is no mistaking the fact that the IGNIS is a very boxy car like its sibling, the Wagon R. The IGNIS’ success depends on how many customers find it appealing. Even though I like the IGNIS’ whacky design, I have a feeling not many people would feel the same way and that this could lead to the IGNIS’ downfall even before it is launched. Quite sad. Interior Design Step inside and you realise that Suzuki has tried hard not to ape the design theme followed by the IGNIS’ siblings like the Swift, Baleno and Ritz. Like the outside, it’s all straight lines here as well. The dashboard is flat and gets a dual-tone finish with the top part finished in black and the lower part finished in grey. The India-spec version is likely to get a beige trim though. A touchscreen display (looks like a floating unit, but look closely and you see juts out of the dashboard) at the centre of the dashboard acts as the screen for the infotainment system. The rectangular AC vents at the centre are placed on either side of the infotainment display screen while the vents on the side are circular ones like on a Swift, but here they get a carbonfibre-like surround. The glovebox sits flush with the dashboard. A closer look at the touchscreen infotainment system. Maruti might ditch this screen and instead opt for the same screen you find on the Baleno, Ciaz, Vitara Brezza and S-Cross. Under the floating display panel lies the HVAC controls (toggle switches to engage AC recirculation, auto climate control, rear defogger and other functions), a 12V charger and switches to engage hill descent control and grip control. Only the middle and top-end variant of the IGNIS will get automatic climate control. The instrument cluster, though clear and legible, is not as great as the very thorough and modern unit seen on the Baleno. The speedometer sits at the centre on the cluster and is backlit in a shade of white. The tachometer sits to the left of the speedo and is smaller in diameter. On the Japanese-spec car, it redlines at 6,500rpm. To the right of the speedo sits the multi-information display (MID) screen (an OLED screen with an orange shade). It displays vital information like fuel level, instantaneous fuel efficiency, average fuel efficiency, odometer, trip meter, cruise control speed limit, temperature and gear indicator. The steering wheel on the Japanese-spec version is not the standard unit that Maruti uses on cars ranging from the Swift to the S-Cross. This unit looks a lot like the one seen on the Hyundai Creta. But expect Maruti to offer the same steering wheel as the Swift and Ciaz, so expect steering-mounted controls for the infotainment system and cruise control (if it is offered on the top-end trim). The front seats look a lot like the ones on the Swift. At the rear, the IGNIS gets a 50:50 split folding seat that can also recline or slid forward to liberate more boot space. Legroom is decent for a sub-4 metre compact crossover although it is not as great as the Mahindra KUV100’s. The Japanese version of the IGNIS gets a three-point seatbelt for the middle passenger, but expect Maruti to only offer a lap-belt in the name of cost-cutting. The boot space stands at 133-litres which can be expanded to 258-litres by folding one rear seat or to 415-litres by folding both the seats.
