On 1 June 1967, Mercedes-Benz engineers Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher teamed up to found AMG. In 1971 the company became famous overnight with the second placing of the 300 SEL 6.8 red touring car with the start number 35, in the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps.
