About Hyundai

History

Incorporated in 1996, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Company (HMC). Hyundai currently has two manufacturing plants in India, located at Irungattukottai and Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, with an annual combined production capacity of 7.65 lakh units a year. In 1998, the Korean manufacturer began manufacturing the Santro followed by its launch. The carmaker is known for its diverse product portfolio and a wide service station network. It is the second largest carmaker in the country by volume and also one of the largest exporters.

Product portfolio

Hatchbacks: Hyundai has a varied lineup of hatchbacks – right from affordable models like the Santro to sportier versions of the Grand i10 Nios and the i20.

Electric Vehicle: The Kona Electric was Hyundai’s launchpad in the Indian EV market. It rivals the MG ZS EV.

Sub-compact SUV: The Hyundai Venue represents Hyundai in the sub-4 metre SUV segment. It goes up against the likes of the Maruti Vitara Brezza and Kia Sonet.

Compact SUV: Hyundai has one of the best selling compact SUVs in its portfolio - the Hyundai Creta. It faces stiff competition from rivals like the Kia Seltos, MG Astor, and the Volkswagen Taigun.

Mid-size SUV: Hyundai offers the Tucson as a 5-seater mid-size SUV that goes head to head with the likes of the Jeep Compass. It also offers the Creta-based Hyundai Alcazar SUV available in 6 or 7 seater configurations. It rivals the likes of Tata Safari as well as the Mahindra XUV700.

Sedan: Hyundai currently has three sedan offerings for the Indian market; the sub-4 metre Hyundai Aura, the Hyundai Verna and the Hyundai Elantra.

Greatest Hits

Hyundai’s top products in India have been:

Hyundai Creta: Introduced in 2014, the Creta disrupted the compact SUV segment and quickly became one of the best selling cars in the country.

Hyundai Verna: Hyundai stepped up the game for Indian sedans with the launch of the Verna in 2006.

Hyundai Santro: One of the longest running and popular hatchbacks in the country.

Hyundai i10: One of the best compact hatchbacks from Hyundai.

Hyundai i20: A more premium hatchback offering from Hyundai, the i20 is known for its styling and features.

Future Plans:

Hyundai has stated that it plans on bringing six EVs in its Indian lineup by 2028. It already has the Kona EV on sale in India and is looking to bring a mass market EV to rival the likes of Tata Nexon EV by 2024. Apart from EVs, Hyundai is also planning to launch the mid-life refreshed versions of the Venue and the Creta as well as the new-gen Hyundai Tucson in the near future.
