Expert's Opinion on Syros?
- Super quirky design guarantees attention
- Front end is inspired by the EV9 with low set headlamps, and an upright bonnet
- 17-inch alloy wheels give the Syros a purposeful stance
- Flush-fitting door handles are a neat touch
- Rear end appears tall and upright like a typical tallboy
- LED lighting enhances its appeal. Available colour options include Frost Blue, Glacier White Pearl, Sparkling Silver, Gravity Grey, Intense Red, Imperial Blue, Pewter Olive and Aurora Black Pearl.
- Lights are placed at extreme edges of the vehicle. Prone to damage even in case of minor bumps
- Design might feel a little too overdone for some.
- The interior puts functionality first, but has a personality thanks to a quirky design.
- High on quality and fit, finish. Interesting textures and recycled materials have been used to make this space unique.
- All grey interiors with matte orange accents are unlike anything else we’ve seen. Clever use of ambient lighting makes it feel almost concept-car like.
- The new steering wheel design with the off-set Kia emblem feels good to hold. Gets buttons for drive and traction modes on the wheel itself.
- Light coloured interiors are prone to getting dirty. They don’t age well either.
- Yes! The Syros is amongst the most spacious small SUVs
- The rear seat features a slide and recline function that enables you to make more room for yourself or your luggage.
- Even someone well over 6ft tall will be able to sit comfortably in the rear seat.
- Footroom and headroom is above average in the rear seat. Door pads have ample space for 1-litre bottles and other knick knacks.
- Storage space in the centre console can be used to store wallets/keys.
- There’s more space under the front armrest and inside the glovebox.
- The boot space can be tailored as per requirement (390-465 litres). Even the least available space is enough for 3 cabin-sized trolley bags and bagpacks. Sliding the rear seats ahead liberates more usable space.
- Seating three at the rear is a tight squeeze.
- Boot space is best utilised by small bags. A single large trolley bag will take up almost the entirety of the boot.
- In the top-spec version, the Syros offers features that are available in a segment above.
- The driver’s seat gets 4-way electric adjustment. Additionally, both front seats get a ventilation function.
- Interestingly, even the rear seat base is ventilated.
- The vehicle features a ‘Trinity’ display that comprises a 12.3-inch driver’s display, 5-inch screen for the climate control and a 12.3-inch touchscreen.
- The touchscreen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and is paired with a crisp sounding 8-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system.
- Other highlight features: panoramic sunroof, configurable ambient lighting, wireless charging, electric parking brake, air purifier and voice commands.
- Plenty of charging options: 2x type-C chargers, 12V charger and wireless charger at the front, and 2x type-C ports for the rear occupants.
- A 6-way powered seat could’ve been offered.
- 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, tyre pressure monitoring system, electronic stability control, hill assist control are offered as standard.
- Front and rear parking sensors and a rear view camera is also available from the base variant making parking convenient.
- Top-spec models feature a 360° camera with a crisp resolution. It also relays feed from the side cameras to the instrument cluster when you indicate.
- A dual-dash camera is offered on the top variant. Footage can be accessed via a smartphone app.
- L2 ADAS uses data from radars and cameras to enable features such as auto emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, rear collision avoidance and more.
- Blind spot monitoring warning on the mirror is missing.
- No crash test report yet.
- It offers choice: a 1.0-litre turbo petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel.
- Automatic options include a 7-speed DCT with the petrol and a 6-speed automatic with the diesel.
- The turbo-petrol engine accelerates briskly and shifts from the 7-speed DCT are quick and seamless.
- Pick the diesel only if daily usage is in excess of 60km. The engine is an all-rounder that offers strong performance and good fuel efficiency.
- Driving modes — Eco, Normal and Sport — alter throttle response. There are traction modes such as sand, snow, mud.
- Noise, vibration and harshness levels are very well controlled. You will hear less from the engine, roads and tyres.
- Both engines feel adequate, but never exciting.
- Fuel efficiency of the 1.0-litre turbo petrol in heavy city traffic is expected to be low at ~10-12kmpl.
- The steering is super light, making parking and city maneuvers easy.
- There’s notable body roll through fast corners owing to the height of the vehicle. Best driven in a controlled manner.
- 189mm of ground clearance and compact proportions give you confidence to tackle bad roads.
- Suspension setup overall needs improvement. It exhibits side-to-side movement over bad roads at low speeds and vertical movement on highways beyond 80kmph.
- The Kia Syros, as outlandish as it may seem, is a thoroughly practical car with a whole lot of feel good factor.
- Anyone who wants a compact car without sacrificing in-cabin space and well-thought out features should consider the Kia Syros.
