First of all manual has a gear stick and clutch pedal which is operated for movement of the vehicle and to the desired speed and traffic conditions. Whereas, in automatic, clutch pedal and gear stick are absent. Instead, it has inbuilt speed acceleration with only accelerator pedal and brake are available so that driving in tight traffic condition will be hassle free.

Dear Anantha, there is a gear lever in an automatic; P (park), R (reverse) and N (neutral) and D (drive). In some cars there is even a paddle shifter in the steering wheel. In case of the Alto k10, since its an AMT (Automated Manual Transmission), it has R, N, D and you can manually shift gears in sequential mode without the need for a clutch pedal.

Since Alto came with AMT rather then the conventional torque converter type ,effect on fuel efficiency is less or nearly the same as the manual transmisson. AMT uses the same clutch system as the manual one but was operated by a hydraulic system to change gears.
