Let’s get some numbers out of the way first.
637 - The number of individual components used in this automotive timepiece and also the most ever used in a watch by the Swiss watchmaker.
50 - The number of days the MP-05 can work when wound up. The incredible power reserve is a world record in automatic watches.
50 -- The number of watches made available to billionaires and royalty.
Watches and high-end carmakers have always had unique partnerships with incredible timepieces (watch is too crude a word) being born out of them. A case in point is the collaboration between the Italian supercar maker Ferrari and Swiss luxury watchmaker Hublot. The best to come out of this alliance has to be the LaFerrari-inspired Hublot MP-05 LaFerrari.
One look and you know it is not for the ordinary billionaire. The unique sapphire casing gives a 360 view of the internals. Its top face shows the time and power reserve while the front window gives an uninterrupted view of the tourbillon movement. The exoskeleton is machined out of a single titanium block and then micro blasted for that black finish. Its design is inspired by the engine bay of Ferrari’s hyper exotic LaFerrari.
The face has a large and curved sapphire glass that shows the power reserve, gears, and cylinders. Instead of dials, the MP-05 LaFerrari gets circular cylinders on both sides. The right side displays the time in hour/minute format while the left shows the power reserve. It gets 11 cylinders in the centre that store the power reserve (potential energy) that is wound through the top. With the watch, you get this unique automatic winder with two small sockets -- one for winding power reserve and one for adjusting the time.
Let’s finish this off with another number.
3,00,000 -- The price in Swiss Francs (around Rs 2.85 crore!) For the price of this timepiece, you can buy a Lamborghini Huracan or a hovel in Cuffe Parade. Hublot had introduced the MP-05 LaFerrari in 2016 and since then has come up with several limited edition spinoffs. The latest one is encased in a transparent sapphire case.
