One of the things that have come out from the Suzuki and Toyota joint venture in India has been the Toyota Glanza, which is a rebadged counterpart of the already existing hatchback: Maruti Suzuki Baleno. Now, both hatchbacks have been given an all-new look for 2022, and unlike before, they now get their own identity. Here’s a look at how different the two hatchbacks are with this latest update:
The biggest change is visible at the front. While the Baleno goes for a considerably wider front grille, the Glanza actually goes sleeker, similar to the likes of the Corolla and Camry. Another noticeable difference is in the bumper updates, with the Glanza having an aggressive bit of cladding around the aid dams and a better use of chrome, which the Baleno doesn’t have.
While the updated headlights look largely identical, if you zoom in a bit, you’ll notice the LED DRLs are different. The Glanza has a single strip running along the headlight, while the Baleno features triple element units.
Heading towards the sides, the two models are largely identical aside from the 16-inch alloy wheels. The Glanza sports an 8-spoke design, while the Baleno has a 10-spoke design.
Aside from different badging at the rear, the two models get the same split-tail lamp setup.
Look inside, and you’ll notice a fairly similar cabin overhaul starting with the larger 9-inch touchscreen, new steering wheel, revised centre console and tweaked AC vents. But, the Glanza has a black-begie theme, while the Baleno gets a black-blue colour scheme.
Features are identical and include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car tech, a head-up display, an Arkamys tuned sound system, 360-degree camera, rear AC vents, automatic climate control, and auto-LED headlights.
Both models share a 90PS 1.2-litre DualJet petrol engine, paired with a 5-speed manual as standard. The CVT from before has been replaced with a 5-speed AMT automatic gearbox option. Toyota claims the manual and AMT Glanza variants will have a fuel economy of 22.3kmpl and 22.9kmpl respectively. For reference, the Baleno returns 22.35kmpl (MT) and 22.94kmpl (AMT).
The 2022 Toyota Glanza retails from Rs 6.39 lakh to Rs 9.69 lakh, while the Maruti Baleno is priced from Rs 6.35 lakh to Rs 9.49 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, India). The former carries a premium of Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 depending on the variant chosen. There’s also the difference in the warranty packages offered, with Toyota offering the Glanza with a 3-year/1 lakh km warranty as standard, and Maruti offering the Baleno with a 2-year/40,000km warranty.
Both models take on the Tata Altroz, Hyundai i20, and Honda Jazz.
