Those brown lines on the back of the rear window are an array of heating elements attached in thin strips to the glass. An electric current is passed through the grid to heat the rear window and remove mist, it can also melt light snow that accumulates on the back window when a car stops at traffic lights. If you touch the lines when the defogger is on chances are that you will not feel any heat. The temperature of the heating element is enough to give you a clear view out of the back window.
