The Maruti Dzire has recently received a generational update, while its rival, the Tata Tigor, has been long overdue for one. Both sub-4m sedans come with an optional factory-fitted CNG kit, albeit specific to certain variants, which we’ll discover below. With all that is packed into the CNG options of both cars, it will be interesting to see which one stands out.
So, in this story, we have dived deep into all the details to figure out the differences:
Car |
Maruti Dzire CNG |
Tata Tigor CNG |
Price (ex-showroom) |
Rs 8.74 lakh to Rs 9.84 lakh |
Rs 7.6 lakh to Rs 9.4 lakh |
Variants |
Vxi, Zxi |
XM, XZ, XZ+ |
The new Dzire offers the CNG option for two of its mid-spec variants sitting between the Lxi and Zxi+ trims, while the Tata Tigor, barring its base-spec XE trim, extends the same to all the trims. Even so, the Tigor CNG’s starting price undercuts the Dzire by up to Rs 1.14 lakh. The top-spec Tigor is also Rs 44,000 more affordable than the one-below-top-spec Dzire.
For such a significant price gap, does the Tigor truly make up for a more value-for-money choice? Let’s find out.

As shown in the table above, the Maruti Dzire is marginally longer, quite wider and a little shorter than the Tigor. Both share a similarly sized wheelbase.
The Tata Tigor, however, brings a larger boot. Notably, the Tigor features dual-cylinder technology, ensuring you don’t have to compromise on boot space even with the CNG option—a limitation seen with the Dzire. If packing a lot for a ride is your priority, the Tigor would be the better pick.

The feature list above, has plenty of hits and punches between the two rival sedans. For the extra money, the Dzire gets LED headlights, larger alloy wheels, a wireless phone charger and rear AC vents, over the Tigor. The Maruti sedan also leads in safety, offering 6 airbags as standard and hill-start assist, both absent in the Tigor.

On the other hand, the Tigor has its own advantages over the Dzire, such as auto-folding ORVMs, an 8-speaker Harman sound system and rain-sensing wipers. It’s important to note that the Tigor being compared here is the fully loaded version, whereas the Dzire is the one-below-top variant.

Both the Dzire and Tigor are equipped with a similar 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine paired with an optional factory-fitted CNG kit. While the Tigor delivers slightly more power, the Dzire compensates with higher torque output. At this point, both rivals are neck-and-neck.
However, the Tigor stands out with its transmission choices—it’s the first in its segment to offer the convenience of an automatic with the AMT option for the CNG variant. It also allows the engine to start directly in CNG mode, a feature unavailable in the Dzire. The Dzire, however, claims to deliver better fuel efficiency than the Tigor.
In conclusion, both sub-compact sedans offer good value for their price points. There are certain hits and misses for both in their feature offerings, while you get a similar powertrain option except for the novel AMT choice in the Tata Tigor. Both the sub-compact sedans also have the Hyundai Aura as a rival in their segment which also offers a CNG option. We have also compared the new Dzire with the same, which you can check in this story. The ICE powered versions of the three also lock horns with the Honda Amaze.
So, between the two sedans compared in this story, which one would be your pick? Let us know in the comments!
