After launching CNG versions of the Tiago and Tigor, Tata is gearing up to do the same with the Punch and Altroz, and both models have been showcased at the Auto Expo 2023 with a CNG kit. They could go on sale in India soon as part of the carmaker’s plans to expand its CNG portfolio.
Both cars should be powered by the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine which is used in the Tiago CNG. This engine, paired with a five-speed manual transmission churns out 73PS and 95Nm in CNG mode on the Tiago CNG. We can expect the same figures on the CNG versions of Punch and Altroz.
There’s one difference, though. Unlike the Tiago CNG and Tigor CNG that get a large CNG tank, the Altroz CNG and Punch CNG gets two small tanks in the interest of more space in the boot. Plus, both models had a single-pane sunroof, a feature that’s absent in the standard models currently.
Features-wise, both will carry over the features from their petrol (and diesel in the case of the Altroz) iterations. Common features for them include a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, semi-digital instrument cluster, cruise control, connected car tech, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors.
While their prices are not out yet, both will likely carry a premium of close to Rs 1 lakh over their petrol-only versions. When launched, the Punch CNG will rival hatchbacks like the Maruti Suzuki Swift CNG and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios CNG, while the Altroz CNG will lock horns with the Toyota Glanza CNG and Maruti Baleno CNG.
