In recent years, the EV space has seen immense growth, with the adoption of electric vehicles being higher than ever. EVs are known for low running costs and being green as compared to the ICEs, but that does not negate the fact that electric bikes and scooters, too, require regular maintenance. And we are here to help you understand the servicing part better.
In an ICE vehicle, maintenance is one of the most strenuous processes as it involves servicing multiple small functioning parts that make the two-wheeler run. However, in an electric vehicle, this process is comparatively easier due to the absence of, primarily, an engine.
So what is different when it comes to servicing an electric vehicle? Well for starters, you don’t need to worry about the engine and its maintenance. What you do need to watch out for are the battery and electricals. Apart from these two, the suspension, brakes, wheels and more follow pretty much the same suit as an ICE two-wheeler.
The battery is the primary powerhouse of an EV and making sure it is functioning properly is the most important task for an EV owner. Battery care mostly involves the way the battery is charged and the conditions it is kept in.
As time passes, the battery drains, which means that it won’t be able to charge to its fullest capacity, therefore, recording the time taken to charge and discharge the same will help you take necessary steps in maintaining the battery pack.
It is suggested that you never let the battery discharge completely, as recharging it from zero percent takes longer and also heats up the battery, which would be detrimental in the long run.
Another thing to remember is to always use the right charger and charge the battery at the correct voltage and not to overcharge it, as that, too, reduces its life. It is also advised to keep the battery charged to a certain level if it is being stored for a prolonged period. Some EVs get a vacation mode for the same, but generally unplugging the batteries works out better.
Lastly, the weather and temperature conditions also play a vital role in the health of your battery pack. The owner's manual that you get with the bike or the battery should have all the details about the maintenance and battery care, and following it would yield good results.
Apart from the battery, the electricals on an EV, too, are something that need to be well maintained and taken care of. This can be done via regular cleaning and ensuring that the electricals as well as the moving parts of your EV two-wheeler are dirt, debris and moisture free.
The maintenance required by the suspension, brakes and wheels are the general kind that involves regular cleaning, check up and lubrication of the parts and also replacing them when necessary.
These are some of the major things to ensure a healthy and prolonged life for your EV two-wheeler. The user manual that comes with an electric scooter or bike can really guide you through the specific requirements of your EV.
