2024 MG Windsor EV Vs Tata Punch EV: Should You Pick Up The Unique Electric Crossover Or The Popular Electric Micro SUV?

While the Windsor EV isn’t a direct rival to the Punch EV, the MG’s aggressive pricing puts it in contention with the Tata EV and hence, the on paper comparison

MG Motor India recently launched their third electric offering, the Windsor EV, on our shores at an aggressive price of Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price point, the electric crossover takes on the electric version of Tata’s best selling SUV, the Punch EV. Yes, these two cars aren’t direct rivals as the specifications and features of the Windsor EV puts it in contention with the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400

But the Windsor EV’s price point makes it a larger alternative to the Tata Punch EV and that’s why we are comparing both EVs. That said, there is a caveat with the MG Windsor EV and we’ll be talking about it in the next section:

The variant-wise prices for the MG Windsor EV are not yet revealed. The electric crossover has a starting price of Rs 9.99 lakh which is similar to the starting price of the Tata Punch EV, which is currently being sold at a special price as part of the festive season offer. However, the price of the Windsor EV is exclusive of the battery pack’s cost which is being offered as part of a rental program. Yes, you heard it right.

If you buy the Windsor EV you also need to pay an extra Rs 3.5 per kilometre for the battery’s usage. If the concept is blurry in your mind, we’ve explained it here in detail. Now looking beyond the price aspect let us compare what both EVs bring to the table on paper:

As you can see above, the MG Windsor EV has ticked all the boxes in outdoing the Tata Punch EV in terms of size. It is clearly a bigger car and has almost double the bootspace than the Punch EV.

So, if you’re a passenger and looking for a spacious cabin, Windsor EV is your answer. However, if you’re someone looking for a more compact daily drive option then the Punch EV might be your choice.

Both the cars are packed with several modern amenities for your comfort, convenience and safety. However, there are certain differences if we look in-depth. The Windsor EV comes equipped with a large infotainment display, a larger glass roof (that can’t be opened), a more premium sound system and reclining rear seats that the Punch EV misses out.

Needless to say, the Windsor EV dominates in this aspect, but the Punch EV doesn’t disappoint.

  • Tata Punch EV offers two battery pack options while the Windsor EV comes with a single battery pack.

  • The Windsor EV gets a larger battery pack compared to both the options available with the Punch EV.

  • The Windsor EV’s motor generates more output compared to the one offered with the Punch EV irrespective of the battery pack it is coupled with.

  • While the Windsor EV gets a higher claimed range than what Punch EV has to offer with the smaller battery pack, the Punch EV gets a point with its long-range battery pack.

Verdict

It’s clear that both EVs are impressive in their own aspects and will satisfy the end user. The Windsor EV is clearly the larger car here and gets more features, but you would have to pay separately for its battery rental program. On the other hand, the Punch EV, sold at its current price, makes for a great buy even though it is a tad smaller than the MG Windsor EV.

At the end of the day, you won’t go wrong with either of these two electric cars.
