EVs are no longer a niche offering. The same couldn't have been said just two years ago, but they seem to have caught on rather quickly, with a handful of options catering to the mass market buyer. We’ve got more than one in almost every segment out there, with a few of them faring quite well, prompting a long queue of buyers. So let's take a look at five EVs under the Rs 20 lakh mark, and their respective waiting periods.

However, cities like Hyderabad and Kolkata have a waiting time of about 45 days, while Pune and Bengaluru have a two-month waiting period.

The second most affordable electric offering comes from the Indian carmaker, Tata. The marque’s Tiago EV, an all-electric rendition of the ICE-powered Tiago, was launched in India in late 2022 and received quite a positive response with over 20,000 units already on the road. Currently, the waiting period for the electric hatchback goes up to three months in cities like Chennai and Bengaluru, while dealerships in Kolkata will make you wait only a month for delivery.

The Tata Tigor EV is one of the older EVs amongst this list, but it's a unique offering in itself as it is actually the only electric sedan under the Rs 20 lakh mark. This exclusivity means that there’s always a demand for it, which means it has a waiting period soaring up to three months in places like Delhi, while most cities have a two-month waiting period for it.

The Nexon EV is one of the pioneering electric offerings that Tata introduced to the masses in India. Since its inception, it has received quite a few updates to keep pace with not just its rivals but also the rapidly developing technology. As a result, the electric sub-4m SUV is still going strong and is the most popular one here. It has a maximum waiting period of up to three and a half months in Mumbai, while those residing in Pune or Kolkata can bring it home in about a month.

Even though the Mahindra XUV400 has been around since the start of this year, the demand for it is still going strong, considering it is just one of the two electric SUV offerings under the Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom) mark. With a maximum waiting period of four months in major cities, the delivery timelines for the XUV400 are still relatively better than a few other Mahindra offerings (read Mahindra XUV700 and Scorpio N) which have waiting periods inching close to the one-year mark.

Even though the pure electric options under the Rs 20 lakh space are still relatively sparse with respect to the available ICE-powered options, the transition is well underway. We reckon these waiting periods are only going to go up as the infrastructure starts to take shape and more people start to flock towards the new technology.
