The stage for the debut of the MG Comet EV is all set for tomorrow on April 19. After a long campaign which included the EV being papped unofficially and then being revealed officially after a host of teasers, we are finally closer than we ever were for the debut of the Comet EV. So before the wraps are off, here are five things to know about it:
Modern, compact and boxy - these three adjectives best define the styling of the MG Comet EV. The nose of the mini-EV sports a split headlight setup with the main LED-equipped unit sitting just above the bumper and a DRL strip spanning the width above it, connecting all the way to the side mirrors.

This is where the boxy feature in the design gets highlighted - the side profile. The windows and the rear are all boxy with a flat roofline that meets the upright back glass with an LED strip beneath it. Going down from the strip, the body curves a bit into the rear bumper, above which are the main taillights.
The Comet EV will truly be a mini EV with an even shorter footprint than that of the Tata Tiago EV, which is the smallest 4-seater EV in the country. We reckon its proportions will be the same as the Wuling Air EV which it is based on; so its small proportions with a width of 1,505mm and length of 2,974mm will make it the quintessential EV for small urban runabouts. Surprisingly though, it sits higher than the Tiago EV with a height of 1,631mm.
MG has teased the cabin of the Comet EV on multiple occasions now, so we know what to expect there - creature comforts and that too a lot of them. The dashboard will be dominated by a dual screen setup with 10.25-inch screens for the main touchscreen system and the digital driver’s display.
Beneath the sleek dashboard, you get the auto AC controls, while there are also Apple iPod-like steering-mounted controls for easier functionality. Apart from these, it’ll get connected car technology, keyless entry, hill-start assist and an electric parking brake.
Features that haven’t been confirmed yet but are expected to be offered include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and likely a parking camera as well.
In international markets, the Comet EV (badged Wuling Air EV) is sold in two variants with different battery sizes - 17.3kWh and 26.7kWh. The bigger one sports a claimed range of up to 300km, while the smaller battery pack promises to deliver up to 200km. It is powered by a single 41PS electric motor, irrespective of the battery or variant selected.
Now which of the two variants will come to India is something we’ll only know at its debut tomorrow.
Even though the Comet EV is a cute little mini-EV, its pricing won’t be as little, because we suspect it to retail from somewhere around the Rs 10-lakh (ex-showroom) mark. Production for the Comet EV has already begun at MG’s plant in Halal, Gujarat. It’ll be a smaller urban-friendly alternative to the Tata Tiago EV and Citroen eC3.
