Teaser video hints at the hybrid Corvette getting a V8 engine and an all-wheel drivetrain.
Currently, the Corvette is offered with a 495PS 6.2-litre V8 and a hardcore 670PS 5.5-litre V8 (ZO6) naturally aspirated petrol engines.
Expect more details to surface as we head closer to 2023.
It was an inevitable scenario, and it's now official. General Motors’ president Mark Reuss confirmed on LinkedIn that the Chevrolet Corvette, the iconic all-American sports car, will be getting an electric powertrain. But before that, we’re getting an electrified (hybrid) iteration as soon as 2023.
While details are scarce, the president of General Motors confirmed that the all-electric Corvette will have General Motors’ Ultium batteries juicing up its powertrains. On top of this announcement, we also got a teaser video of a camouflaged prototype throwing itself around snowy terrains. We think it’s the hybrid Corvette, considering we could hear a screaming V8 engine in the background. As far as looks go, the prototype looks largely identical to the standard model, aside from the yellow brake callipers.
Eagle-eyed viewers will also notice the front wheels spinning before the rears, essentially confirming an all-wheel-drive setup. If the ICE engine is a V8, then we think the electric motor will be powering the front wheels.
The Corvette EV and hybrid will join the current petrol-powered lineup. Right now, we’ve got a naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 engine making 495PS and 673Nm, paired to an 8-speed DCT. If that’s not extreme enough, there’s the hardcore ZO6, that produces a whopping 670PS out of a flat-plane-crank 5.5-litre V8 engine.
Expect more details to surface as we get closer to 2023 which will kick off the Chevrolet Corvette’s electric journey.
