German automaker Mercedes-Benz, known for creating outlandish and striking concept cars, has showcased its Vision One-Eleven concept at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai. This stunning concept is said to be a reinterpretation of its 70s prototype models that blends with modern design ideas. Notably, this is not the first time Mercedes-Benz has brought a concept to India. The Mercedes-Maybach Vision 6 Coupe, AMG GT6, all-electric G-Class, and The Project Maybach were also on display here. Now, let us dive deeper into the Vision One-Eleven.
The Vision One-Eleven is an all-electric sports car concept that bears a fusion of modern design language and the C111 experimental prototypes from 1960 and 70s designed to test engine technologies, which were well-known for several reasons, including their aerodynamic design, gullwing doors, and vibrant paint work.
Coming back to the concept, the Vision One-Eleven not only pays homage to this legacy but also employs the brand’s “One-Bow” design – flowing silhouette that spans the cars length with smooth curve – and it has been seen on the latest EQ models, such as the EQS sedan. This low-slung front end, large diameter wheels fitted into flared wings, muscular posterior, and black front and rear skirts also dominate the styling of the Vision One-Eleven. Another design highlight are its gullwing doors similar to that of the legendary 300 SL.
Since this is a futuristic sports car concept, Mercedes has given it a flexible external display panel at the front that matches the C111’s round fog lamps with a digital 3D pixelated pattern. It also doubles up for real-time communication with road users. The rear is as fancier as the front, featuring pixelated taillights and a quirky diffuser.
The Vision-One Eleven has broken boundaries with its outlandish interior that can accommodate two passengers, including the driver. The highlight of the cabin are its two modes: race and lounge. While the former keeps the seats upright and the drive is close to the steering wheel and displays, in the latter, they are integrated into the surrounding interior structure, merging the luggage compartment and centre tunnel into a single unit, making the Vision One-Eleven ready for autonomous driving.
The seats are also designed unlike the traditional layouts seen on the on-sale cars. They are flush-fitted on the floor and are reminiscent of the ones on the F1 cars. Although they look sporty, they are designed for comfort, says Mercedes. Like the modern cars, the Vision One-Eleven concept boasts recycled materials for the interior as well as leather derived from sustainable processed coffee beans husks.
Powering the Vision One-Eleven is a new electric powertrain that comprises two axial-flux motors developed in partnership with British electric motor specialist YASA. These motors are said to be more compact, more efficient, lighter, and deliver more power output than the conventional radial-flux motors. Also on offer is a distinct battery pack that uses liquid-cooled cylindrical cells and a new cell chemistry inspired by Formula 1.
The Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven concept electric vehicle shows off the future design direction of the brand. While the sports car is in a concept form, it could be a reality in the coming years. If you can, go check it out in-person quickly, as it is going to be at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre for a limited period.
