Remember DeLorean, the same carmaker that brought the DMC12 two-door sports car which was none other than the iconic pop culture time machine from the Back To The Future film trilogy 40 years ago? Well its back, and it's looking to the future (no pun intended) with the all-new Alpha5 coupe. And what better way for DeLorean to come back with a futuristic theme than having the Alpha5 run on all-electric propulsion?
Like a lot of modern EVs today, the Alpha5 gets slim lighting, massive wheels, is curvaceous and gets clean styling to the point it boasts a 0.23 drag coefficient. We’ve also gotten a bit of a nod to the icon that is the DMC12 with the swoopy roofline and rear glass louvres. But what really honours the DMC12 is undoubtedly the gullwing doors.
While there’s no flux capacitor inside, we’ve got individual rear seats instead. At the front it is nice and minimalistic with a wraparound layout as well as not having unnecessarily clutter of conventional controls. The driver is met with a large floating digital instrument cluster with a portrait-style touchscreen infotainment system that blends with the centre console. Looking at the minimalist cabin, it seems like the infotainment system handles most of the in-car functions.
Being an EV, how can you not talk about what’s under the hood? While DeLorean hasn’t divulged proper details on its electric powertrain setup, it can hit 0-97kmph in under three seconds, and is claimed to top out at speeds over 250kmph. Keep in mind, this is just for the base performance model which hints at spicier options in the near future.
Giving this electric powertrain juice will be a battery pack claimed to have a capacity over 100kWh. This helps the Alpha5 garner an EPA-claimed range over 300 miles (483km) on a single charge.
Of course it just had to be the case that the DeLorean Alpha5 will be limited to only 88 units (get the reference?). Unfortunately you’ll have to wait until 2024 to get your hands on it as production will only begin around that timeline. Thought that was all coming from DeLorean’s revival? Nope, as the carmaker is planning to introduce a V8-powered sports coupe followed by an electric sedan and a hydrogen-powered SUV.
