Global debut on April 17, India launch possible sometime in 2024 after other EQ products.
A full year after the global premiere of its GLS-equivalent electric SUV, the EQS SUV, Mercedes is set to unveil its ultra-luxurious, Maybach version. The Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV is the first-ever EV from Maybach, and is set to make its debut on April 17 at the 2023 Auto Shanghai in China. It’ll be the top-of-the-line EV in the carmaker’s lineup, an all-electric and polar opposite alternative to the loud and blingy Maybach GLS 600.
What will the Maybach EQS 680 SUV look like?
Until now, Mercedes has only given us teasers of its upcoming EV, so we only know of its design from a concept SUV that was unveiled back in 2021 (pictured above). Safe to say, the overall design shape of the SUV should be largely similar to the EQS SUV that already exists overseas.
However, it’ll certainly get several trademark Maybach styling changes, such as a vertically slatted covered front grille and a chrome mesh lower air vent. The EQS 680 SUV should also get bling chrome wheels alongside the striking dual-tone paint scheme we’ve seen on other existing Maybach cars such as the S-Class and GLS 600. And lastly, we hope to see the famed three-pointed star take its perch on the hood.
Interiors: concept vs reality
the automobile community
Mercedes should offer the EQS 680 SUV with the optional Hyperscreen that covers the full dashboard. The overall layout should remain largely the same as the existing EQS SUV, but it’ll probably be covered head-to-toe in bespoke, exquisite top-notch materials. The concept also had man-made fur floors, a feature we could see in the real-life EQS 680 SUV.
Maybach models always emphasise the rear seating experience, and the EQS 680 should offer the best rear seat of any Merc EV. The massive, commodious SUV will only carry four people, so the two-chair rear seat should get appointments such as a drinks refrigerator, full infotainment controls and rear-facing touchscreens.

The carmaker hasn’t yet revealed the EQS 680 SUV’s powertrain specs, but we reckon it should get a dual-motor and an all-wheel-drive system similar to the standard electric SUV, making more power than the EQS 580 SUV, which has an output of 544PS and 858Nm. The Maybach EQS SUV is likely to use the same 108.4kWh battery pack as the standard EQS SUV, but its more powerful electric drivetrain and luxurious features could affect the range, rated at up to 580km for the regular EQS.
Mercedes has been bringing its flagship global products including EVs to India, so we also expect the Maybach EQS 680 SUV to be offered here sometime in the future. However, Mercedes is yet to expand its electric portfolio here with the vast range of EVs that already exist overseas. We expect these models, including the EQE sedan, EQE SUV and EQS SUV, to be launched here prior to the arrival of the flagship Maybach EV.
