Harley-Davidson’s electric sub-brand, LiveWire, has launched the S2 Del Mar Launch Edition e-motorcycle in America. The Launch Edition retails at USD 17,699 (around Rs 13.67 lakh) and is limited to only 100 models, which were sold out in just 18 minutes of the bike sale going live.
In terms of appearance, the S2 Del Mar adopts a flat-tracker design with minimal body panels and a single seat extending up to the slim ‘fuel tank’. The Launch Edition comes with two exclusive paint schemes: Jasper Gray and Comet Indigo, which look more like camo than actual livery.
What’s most striking on the flat-tracker is the rib-cage-inspired battery casing that gives it a post-apocalyptic feel. It gets a H-D Fat Bob inspired long oval LED headlight, that looks striking to say the least. Coupled with the handlebar-end rear-view mirrors and circular turn indicators, the Del Mar has a distinct retro-futuristic appeal.
Powering the S2 Del Mar is LiveWire’s proprietary battery and motor tech that is designed to deliver 80PS or more, which is expected to let the Del Mar do the 0-100kmph dash in 3.5 seconds or less. In terms of range H-D is targeting 160km in the city. That said, technical details about the electric drivetrain and battery pack haven't yet been revealed.
The S2 Del Mar is the first bike from the American manufacturer to be based on its Arrow architecture that is designed to be modular and, which can have various types of chassis built around the battery as a stressed member.
It is suspended on a USD fork up front and a monoshock with pre-load adjustability in the rear. The EV rolls on 19-inch flat-track inspired cast aluminium wheels which get a spoke design that H-D claims will offer great lateral stiffness for an enhanced riding experience. The rims are wrapped with Dunlop DT-1 tyres. These tyres and wheels are exclusive to the Launch Edition. The e-bike is anchored by discs on both ends with Brembo calipers.
With the Launch Edition model already sold out, people eager to buy the new electric motorcycle from H-D will have to wait another year, as the standard model is expected to be launched around March 2023 in the USA. H-D is targeting to price the S2 Del Mar at USD 15,000, equivalent to Rs 11.58 lakh (without Indian taxes and duties), making it a quite a bit more affordable LiveWire model.
Expect the LiveWire Del Mar to land on our shores later next year, and it will likely come with an estimated price tag of Rs 15 lakh. Currently, the motorcycle does not have any natural rivals in its segment.
