The Tata Punch EV is one of the latest EVs on the block, trying to make a case and aid the shift from conventional IC engines to electrification. Unlike other existing Tata EVs, this one is based on a brand new dedicated EV platform. With a 25kWh battery and a 35kWh battery on offer, the Punch EV claims to go up to 421km on a single charge with the bigger battery (long-range variant).
In today's story, we put that claim to test as we find out how close the Punch EV can get to its claimed figures and simultaneously find its real-world range as well. Let’s go:
With the Punch EV juiced up to a full charge, the indicated range on the odometer was 233km. The drive mode was set in Eco and regen was set to full (level 3); so that 233 figure was as big as it was gonna get to begin with. Considering it was a boiling hot day, generous use of AC and even ventilated seats was granted for the sake of the testers.
Now this test, coined as ‘Drive To Death’, has a predefined route that is followed, for the sake of consistency. It includes the usual city driving, inclines, highways and expressways. So a proper mixed bag for seeking a figure that gives us the true range of the Punch EV.

Skip to 10 percent charge remaining, and the Tata Punch EV range readout bids adieu, power gets restricted and top speed is capped at 55kmph too. It is a proper limp-home mode, but you do still get AC functionality. At 5 percent, however, that creature comfort bids adieu as well.
With 1 percent of charge left, the Punch EV’s trip was 258.6km, which can be rounded up to 259km. Mind you, this test was done on an absurdly hot day, and the Punch EV could return a slightly better range when the temperatures are kinder. While it couldn’t cross the 300km mark in this specific test, the clocked range is still pretty good for a small electric SUV.
