Talking about EVs, the Indian market is at a good surge of potential four-wheelers from multiple brands. But what is basking in the most spotlight lately is MG Motor India’s Windsor EV. Right from its launch in 2024, it has garnered humongous attention, thanks to its not-seen-before body style, good features – of course and the battery rental scheme that debuted with it, hence making it attractively priced from Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).
It’s no surprise that the Windsor EV has quickly become India’s electric darling, selling like hotcakes and even giving higher segments a good challenge. If you're thinking of joining the bandwagon of Windsor EV owners, let’s make your decision easier by breaking down its strengths and shortcomings.
Step inside the MG Windsor EV, and you’re greeted by a plush, well-thought-out interior layout. High-quality materials and soft-touch finishes make it feel like a class above its competitors. A large panoramic glass roof floods the cabin with natural light, along with a 9-speaker Infinity sound system that enhances the premium experience for passengers.
The Windsor EV isn’t just about looking good. The drive is buttery smooth, with a 38.7 kWh battery pack powering the motor, which churns out 136 PS and 200 Nm of torque – more than enough for overtaking needs.
Ride comfort is where the Windsor scores big. You’d want to have this car more for being chauffeur-driven. It glides over potholes and bad roads like a seasoned luxury car. It is spacious, has ample room for passengers, and not to mention the 135-degree reclining rear seats to lounge in. Cleverly designed storage spaces add to its best-in-segment practicality. It has solid build quality – nothing feels budget-grade. Plus, MG’s unique warranty, buy-back program, and free charging perks make it an even sweeter deal for first-time EV buyers.
While the Windsor EV does a lot right, there are a few quirks that might not sit well with everyone. For starters, its design is a bit of a love-it-or-hate-it affair. While some appreciate its unconventional styling, others might find it a bit weird. Then there’s the range, a crucial factor for EV buyers. Its real-world range sits somewhere around 240 km, which may leave some users with a case of range anxiety, especially for longer journeys.
You might also find the instrument cluster a tad underwhelming – it’s smaller than expected, given the otherwise premium feel of the cabin. The too much of touchscreen and steering-integrated controls aren’t the most intuitive to use on the move.
MG’s Battery-as-a-Service (BAAS) scheme, which requires a minimum billing of 1,500 km per month is also great for daily users but potentially impractical for those with lighter driving needs. And while the rear seat reclines well, it does eat into boot space, which might be a concern for long drives.
The MG Windsor EV starts at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), but its battery rental plan adds Rs 3.5 per km. An all-inclusive purchase costs between Rs 13.5 lakh and Rs 15.5 lakh, depending on the variant. It directly rivals the Tata Punch EV, while with the full-package it rivals the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400.
If you are an urban dweller who primarily commutes within city limits, the MG Windsor EV with its ownership deal and the things on board makes for a good choice. However, if long highway trips are a frequent part of your routine, its real-world range might require extra planning. Ultimately, if you value comfort and a stress-free city driving experience, the Windsor EV is worth considering.
