Kia showcased the production-ready EV5 electric SUV at the Chengdu Motor Show. It will be launched in China followed by other global markets

  • Kia EV5 showcased at Chengdu Motor Show.
  • It is the third dedicated electric vehicle from Kia after EV6 and EV9.
  • To be launched first in China, followed by other markets.
  • Full technical specifications will be revealed closer to launch.

The new Kia EV5 is the next new dedicated all-electric car from the Korean carmaker after the ground-up built EV6 and EV9 models. In terms of design, it gets a two-box design and Kia is positioning it as an electric alternative to the Kia Sportage. The main highlights of the Kia EV5 are its sharp design, practicality, and generous interior space.

We can notice that the Kia EV5’s design is inspired by the larger EV9. It comes with meaty cladding on the lower areas, dual-tone alloys, and a minimalist front end. The front gets large DRLs along with what appears to be a full-width light bar. The rear gets the familiar Kia treatment of C-shaped tail lamps and a two-piece light bar meeting the Kia logo in the middle.

Coming to the insides, the EV5 gets multiple configurations and gets the dual display layout as seen in its recent offerings. Other design highlights include a four-spoke steering wheel and sleek AC vents in the central console. There are also plenty more ways you can customise the cabin of the car.

Kia is offering four interior colours and five upholstery patterns for the seats. Further, there is a mood lighting system that comes with adjustable brightness. There are a total of 64 colours to choose from, which include 10 shades specially designed by Kia’s lighting experts. These lights also synchronise with the car’s driving modes, automatically dim in low light, and if the driver exceeds the speed limit, changes colour to alert the driver.

While full technical specifications of the car are not released, we suspect it to get both single- and dual-motor options, as well as varying battery pack sizes. More details on this will follow soon, so stay tuned.

And finally, while the car has been designed with the Chinese market in mind, Kia will launch it in other global markets eventually. It will go on sale in China later this year, and we suspect it’ll come to India and be positioned under the EV6 in Kia’s lineup.
