Lotus has taken the veil off its second ever electric vehicle (EV), the Eletre electric ‘hyper SUV’. It’s a 600PS super SUV that has no direct rivals, but will compete with the ICE Lamborghini Urus and upcoming Ferrari Purosangue SUVs. It’ll be produced in China for global markets with deliveries set to begin in 2023, but won’t be offered in India since the carmaker doesn’t have any presence here.

It may only be a five-seater, but the Eletre is gigantic – it has a five-metre length and 3,019mm wheelbase – similar numbers as the Kia Carnival. It has a striking aesthetic with a low-slung stance and a gaping air dam at the front. Its 5-spoke alloy wheels are massive, and they’ll be available in a 23-inch rim size and with ceramic brakes as an option.

Inside, the electric SUV gets a plush cabin with a large, floating infotainment touchscreen at the centre of the dashboard. It has a digital driver’s display and even a third display for the passenger. The rearview cameras display their feed onto separate screens placed below the A-pillars.

The Eletre will have a KEF sound system with a 1,380W output and 15 speakers as standard, but the top-shelf audio option is a 2,160W, 23-speaker setup with 3D surround sound!

It’ll be powered by front and rear electric motors for all-wheel-drive and a power output of 600PS. Lotus claims the SUV will be good for a 0-100kmph time of under three seconds.

All that power will come from a battery that holds over 100kWh of charge. It’ll lend the SUV an estimated range of 600km on a single charge. The Eletre will offer a peak charging rate of 350kW, at which you’ll be able to recover 400km of range in just 20 minutes.

As an SUV, a luxury car and electric vehicle, the Lotus Eletre kicks  off a departure from the carmaker’s legacy. It’ll be sold alongside the Emira sports car when it goes on sale, possibly in late 2022.
