These SUVs will be based on an electric vehicle platform developed from the ground up

Mahindra will take the wraps off three concept electric vehicles (EVs), better known as the Born EVs, on Independence Day. The concepts are set to reach the production stage by 2025, and more details about them will be revealed from July onward.

What is Mahindra’s Born Electric Vision?

‘Born Electric’ vehicles are a range of electric SUVs based on a common dedicated EV platform. From the teasers, it seems that the SUVs will fall between the midsize and full-size SUV segments. They seem to share a common design language with common cues such as C-shaped LED headlights and taillights, sloping roof lines and notchback tailgate designs.

Inside, the SUVs will each get a minimalist cabin layout with a single wide panel for the infotainment and driver’s instrumentation displays. In addition, they have a panoramic glass roof, centre-console-mounted drive mode selector and ambient lighting. These features have been showcased in previous teasers from Mahindra.

Mahindra hasn’t divulged any details of the powertrains, but we expect two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive electric systems to be offered, both powered by a set of long-range battery packs. The carmaker has teamed up with Volkswagen to evaluate the possibility of sharing components and architectures with MEB platform vehicles.

It’s been a while since we saw a new electric vehicle from Mahindra. The carmaker’s next EV is the XUV300 Electric that will debut in early 2023. It’ll be a longer, more practical SUV than the existing ICE XUV300 sub-4-metre SUV.
