Mahindra has taken the wraps off its upcoming range of five electric SUVs that’ll be sold under the new ‘XUV’ and ‘BE’ all-electric sub-brands. All five SUVs are underpinned by the INGLO ground-up electric platform that’s been developed using components from the Volkswagen MEB modular electric toolkit.

Here’s an overview of the entire range of concept EVs:

Mahindra XUV e8

The XUV700-based e8 will be the first to arrive among the electric SUVs that were unveiled. Due for launch in December 2024, the XUV e8 will be equipped with all-wheel drive similar to its ICE sibling.

Inside, the SUV will feature a wide panoramic display that extends all the way to the passenger side with familiar bits such as the steering wheel with the Mahindra twin peaks logo in copper, climate controls and overhead storage and buttons.

The e9 is a coupe-SUV version of the XUV e8 concept with even larger proportions (albeit a shorter height than the e8 EV). It’s due for launch in April 2025.

Mahindra BE 05

The smallest of the Born EVs will be 4.3 metres long (Hyundai Creta-sized), with an emphasis on the ‘sporty’ aspect of Sports Utility Vehicles. There will be a new illuminated BE logo for the Born Electric range of SUVs. In addition to its new insignia, the concept BE 05 features a striking design with sharp body lines and a coupe roofline.

Inside, it has a single panoramic display for the driver instrumentation and infotainment, with controls for the driving modes placed on the centre console. It’s set to launch in October 2025.

Mahindra BE 07

The 07 is a mid-size family SUV concept similar to the Tata Harrier in proportions. It has an imposing front fascia with straight body lines and chunky flared wheel arches. Inside, it features a five-seater layout, panoramic sky roof and a wide panoramic display that takes up almost the entire width of the dashboard.

The 4.5-metre long SUV is the middle ground between the compact BE 05 and XUV700-sized XUV e8, due for launch in October 2026.

Mahindra BE 09

The final Born Electric SUV is the 09, a 07 EV-based grand tourer SUV with a sporty sloping roofline that’s even more pronounced than the XUV e9. Its launch date hasn’t been announced, but it could debut around late 2027.

Born Electric SUVs and INGLO platform specs

Mahindra’s new INGLO platform is a lightweight skateboard that’ll be equipped with new LFP lithium-ion cells based on blade and prismatic cell architectures. Volkswagen-sourced battery packs of capacities ranging from 60kWh to 80kWh will be offered on the different SUVs, each with a peak fast-charging rate of 175kW. At this wattage, the SUVs will be capable of juicing up to 80 per cent in under 30 minutes.

The top-spec 80kWh battery pack offers a WLTP range of up to 450km. Expect real-world figures of 350-400km for the smaller battery packs.

The platform supports rear-drive powertrains with an output of 230-285PS and all-wheel drive with up to 395PS of power. Mahindra claims a 0-100kmph time of 5 and 6 seconds for the EVs based on this platform. Expect the actual power, torque and range figures for each SUV to be announced at their respective official debuts.

With the range of five XUV and BE SUVs, the carmaker expects a significant chunk of its sales to come from EVs in the future. Mahindra’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr Anish Shah, said “By 2027, we expect that a quarter of the SUVs we sell will be electric.”
