After multiple teasers, Mahindra is set to reveal its first all-electric SUV, called the XUV400, tomorrow. It is a slightly larger, all-electric iteration of the ICE powered XUV300 that’ll mark the debut of the brand’s electric lineup.
We’ve gathered and jotted down the top five things to know about the upcoming electric SUV ahead of its debut tomorrow.
Being an all-electric version of the XUV300, it should’ve been a sub-4m vehicle. But given the fact that electric cars are exempted from tax benefits offered on sub-4m cars, Mahindra has redesigned the XUV400’s rear profile, making it 200mm longer than its ICE counterpart. The increase in size should translate to a bigger boot space as the wheelbase and overall cabin space remains identical.
The host of teasers revealed by Mahindra gives a fair idea of the design language of the XUV400. While the overall silhouette is nearly identical apart from the elongated rear end, a few subtle design revisions differentiate the electric SUV from its ICE sibling. The changes comprise the new ‘Twin Peaks’ Mahindra emblem finished in copper, a revised headlamp design which gets a copper finished strip in place of the extended DRLs, tail lights with revised LED internals, a dual-tone grille with copper inserts, and new alloy wheels. A new Blue hue was also seen in the latest teaser, which also highlighted a few EV-specific design cues.

The features list of the XUV400 will be on par with the XUV300’s. While retaining the features of the XUV300, we expect the electric SUV to pack a larger touchscreen, a sunroof, ventilated front seats, connected car tech, a digital driver’s display, and cruise control. Its safety kit could include six airbags, hill-hold assist, and even a few ADAS systems.
With the XUV400 positioned as a rival to the Nexon EV, its powertrain specifications should be benchmarked against the electric Tata. Like the Nexon EV, it is likely to get multiple battery pack options offering different ranges. We expect the XUV400 to be good for a claimed range of around 450km on a single charge.
Mahindra could price the XUV400 between Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom). It will compete directly with the Nexon EV, prices for which start from Rs 14.99 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Prime variant, going up to Rs 20.04 lakh for the MAX variant. Mahindra’s first electric SUV can also be regarded as an affordable alternative to the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric.
