Mahindra recently introduced its new electric SUVs, the BE 6e and XEV 9e, at an event in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The hours-long presentation not only provided the usual details about the offerings but also showcased deeper insights into their technology. More importantly, Mahindra made several bold claims about the capabilities of the BE 6e and XEV 9e, positioning them as being on par with high-end luxury vehicles from higher segments. Below, we take a closer look at the bold claims Mahindra made.
The BE 6e and XEV 9e are built on Mahindra’s new INGLO architecture, which supports two battery options: 59 kWh and 79 kWh packs. These batteries feature LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) technology, known for its longevity, safety, and stability.
Mahindra claims that the batteries are fire resistant for up to 3 minutes at temperatures ranging from 800 to 900 degrees celsius. To demonstrate the robustness of the battery, Mahindra presented a few videos showing various tests, including a crush test with 20-tonne load, a 30-minute water immersion test, and a vibration test.
In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a cornerstone of innovation in various industries and shown the world its mind-blowing uses in real-life. From enhancing smartphone cameras to enabling autonomous driving, AI is being used in incredibly sophisticated ways.
The Mahindra Artificial Intelligence Architecture (MAIA) is one of the examples of how AI is shaping the automotive industry, especially cars. MAIA can be described as a neural network – a machine learning (ML) programme that mimics decisions in a manner similar to the human brain.
Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8295 processor, 6th-gen Adreno GPU, 24 GB RAM, 128 GB storage, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6, and 5G connectivity, Mahindra claims that MAIA is “the most powerful mind” in the automotive industry, also rivaling even the best in the smartphone industry.
Modern-day cars are equipped with advanced processors, such as Nvidia Drive and Qualcomm Snapdragon, to handle a wide range of complex vehicular functions. The processor enables semi-autonomous driving or self driving as well as real-time data processing for applications, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-based voice assistant.
In addition, the processor facilitates seamless wireless communication, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology, and augmented reality (AR) navigation. They also power the driver’s display and infotainment system.
Another bold claim from Mahindra is that the BE 6e and XEV 9e offer some of the quietest in-cabin experiences compared to the luxury cars. According to Mahindra, these electric SUVs have an impressive sound isolation.
The graph showcased in the presentation showed how BE 6e and XEV 9e compared to four unnamed luxury cars. While one of the luxury vehicles surpassed both the Mahindra models in sound isolation, the electric SUVs still performed really well, making a strong case for their quiet cabin experience, at least on paper.
Despite looking similar, EV-specific tyres help reduce road noise in several ways compared to normal tyres. These tyres, in the BE 6e and the XEV 9e have a layer of thick sponge inside them which absorbs road noise and keeps the cabin quieter while cruising on a highway.
Fun fact: High-end luxury cars use active noise cancelling technology to create a quiet cabin. Similar to the active noise cancellation on flagship headphones, these cars are equipped with microphones throughout the vehicle that detect both external and internal noise. A system then generates sound frequencies that cancel out unwanted noise, including tyre and wind noises.
Mahindra also claimed that The BE 6e has the most powerful in-cabin air conditioning system of any vehicle in its class and some luxury vehicles in higher segment. To demonstrate this, Mahindra compared BE 6e’s cooling performance with that of the other three cars.
The test involved assessing how long the cars take to cool the cabin from 40 to 24-degree with an ambient temperature of 45-degree. The BE 6e excelled in the test, claiming to be fastest at cooling down the cabin on a scorching hot day.
During the event, Mahindra also compared the performance of the BE 6e and XEV 9e and compared that with that of the luxury cars alongside the “best ICE” car, as per the brand. The comparison was based on an acceleration.
It is important to note that Mahindra’s claims were based on “inhouse measurements" and we cannot verify the accuracy of these tests until we conduct our own real-world evaluations of the BE 6e and XEV 9e. However, Mahindra’s bold claims place its electric SUVs in direct competition with premium electric vehicles in terms of technology and performance.
