  • Maruti Suzuki to reveal electric SUV concept at Auto Expo.
  • It will be similar in proportion to the Grand Vitara.
  • Likely to debut a new design language for the carmaker.
  • Expected to have a claimed range of around 500km.
  • Production version to debut in 2025.

As news about 2023 Auto Expo is starting to ramp up, Maruti Suzuki has deemed it right to now reveal its plan for the event. While the carmaker will showcase two new SUVs at the biennial show, it’ll also unveil its first electric SUV for the Indian market via a concept there. This particular SUV will be the carmaker’s first all-electric vehicle for the Indian market and will go on sale in 2025.

Not many details about this electric vehicle have been revealed yet. But, what we do know is that it will be similar in size to the Grand Vitara compact SUV, which is around 4.3 metres long. So, expect the e-SUV to be a more spacious alternative to the likes of the Mahindra XUV400 and the current reigning EV in India, the Tata Nexon EV

In terms of design, this Maruti EV is expected to debut a new design language with no similarities to the marque’s current lineup of cars. A sporty and angular design with sharp creases is likely along with body cladding for that added butchness. Maruti could also take Toyota’s help (there could be a separate Toyota version as well) in finalising the looks of this SUV, but the Maruti version will have its own bespoke design touches.

It’s still too early to talk about technical specifications, but you can expect a large battery pack in the range of 70kWh to 80kWh, powering an electric motor and offering a claimed range of around 500km. Once again, Maruti Suzuki could take the expertise of Toyota for the platform, which already has standalone electric vehicles like the b4ZX.

Though Maruti isn’t in a rush to introduce its first EV in India, there’s no denying the fact that the carmaker is late to the party, especially with Tata currently dominating the space. However, unlike current carmakers who are filling up the entry-level space, it looks like Maruti wants to offer a premium product with around 500km range and a price tag of around Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom).
