The cutesy commuter EV has a small footprint but packs a slew of cutting-edge features inside

  • MG Comet EV is a smaller alternative to the Tata Tiago EV and Citroen eC3.

  • It’s likely to be offered with two battery sizes with up to 300km of range.

  • Features include a digital driver’s display, a large touchscreen and connected car tech.

  • Launch likely to be held in the second half of April.

  • Prices should start at around Rs 9 lakh (ex-showroom).

It seems that MG India’s first mass market electric car’s launch is closer than we thought. The Comet EV is likely to debut sometime in the second half of April 2023. It’ll be a rival to the Tata Tiago EV and Citroen eC3, and is a much more quirky and smaller alternative to its rivals.

MG Comet EV Launch Timeline

Until now, MG has only confirmed the Comet EV’s name and released its images, you can take a closer look at it here and see the available colour options in this web reel. Although the car is identical to the Wuling Air EV, MG is yet to officially reveal the final specs of the Comet and of course, its launch date. However, the EV could enter the market in the second half of April.

Range and features

We reckon MG will offer the Comet EV in two variants, similar to how the Air EV is sold in Indonesia. There should be an entry-level, standard-range variant with a 17.3kWh battery pack; and a long-range version with a 26.7kWh battery. The two variants deliver up to 200km and 300km of claimed range, respectively. It’s powered by an e-motor good for 41PS that drives the rear wheels.

The Comet EV is a sub-three-metre-long, compact electric car, but it makes up for the  apparent lack of size with decent range and a smattering of amenities. It gets a dual display panel inside that houses a fully digital driver’s display alongside the infotainment screen. Other features include climate control and connected car tech, while the safety suite should consist of multiple airbags, parking sensors, hill start assist and stability control.

The Comet EV should be priced from around Rs 9 lakh onwards (ex-showroom). It’ll be a smaller rival to the aforementioned Tiago EV and eC3 electric cars, in addition to upcoming compact, mass market electric vehicles from other carmakers.
