At Rs 7.98 lakh (ex-showroom), the MG Comet EV is the most affordable passenger EV you can buy in India. The closest rival in terms of price is the entry-level standard range version of the Tata Tiago EV that retails from Rs 8.69 lakh (ex-showroom). What are the differences between the two models?
That’s what we are going to talk about today, and here are 5 such contrasts.

The MG Comet EV is a quirky 2-door 4-seater model that’s ultra compact, making it perfect for city runabouts. It’s the smaller car here in all aspects save for its height. Accessing the rear part of the cabin requires you to flip the front co-driver seat and requires a bit of gymnastic skills for ingress and egress.
On the other hand, the Tiago EV is clearly the larger car here and is a conventional hatchback. It has conventional doors and even a proper boot to carry luggage. And yes, it might not be as small as the Comet, but still, the Tiago EV’s size is also perfect for urban city commute.

The MG Comet EV is a born electric model with an EV-only platform. That means the hatchback can’t support any ICE powertrains. The main advantage here is packaging, allowing carmakers to extract as much space as possible as EVs have lesser moving parts.

On the other hand, the Tiago is born as an ICE car and then a electric powertrain has been plonked in. So yes, while it does the job of providing you with emission-free mobility, it isn’t as package friendly as a pure electric car. For example, EVs based on ICE platforms have a transmission tunnel, which is completely eradicated in case of an electric-only platform like the Comet’s.
With an EV-only platform, rear-wheel-drive cars are making a comeback. And surprise surprise, the Comet EV gets a rear-mounted motor spinning the rear wheels. For now, the Comet EV gets a 17.3kWh battery pack paired to a 42PS e-motor, good for a claimed range of 230km.
On the other hand, the Tiago EV being based on a front-wheel-drive architecture gets a motor plonked on the front axle, spinning the… you guessed it… front wheels. It also gets two powertrain options – Standard and Long Range – both of which get varying specifications, which have been detailed in the table below:
Standard Range |
Long Range |

One advantage the Tiago EV has over the Comet is fast-charging capability. You can juice it from 10 to 80 percent in 58 minutes using a DC fast charger. On the other hand, the Comet EV only gets DC wall box charging, which takes about five hours for 10 to 80 percent charge.
There’s a fair bit of differences between the two models when it comes to features. For starters, common kit includes a touchscreen infotainment system, keyless entry, connected car tech, steering-mounted audio controls, power windows, dual airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors with camera.

As a standalone offering, the MG Comet EV offers good value for money with a decent range and a well-loaded features list. However, if you want a larger car, the Tiago Standard Range comes at a minor premium with slightly better specs. But do note that the standard range Tiago EV is based on the lower variants, so you would be missing out on creature comforts.
If you want a well-loaded Tiago EV, you have no other choice but to pick the Long Range variants that come at a significant premium over the Comet EV. We would be doing a detailed comparison test between both the models, so stay tuned.
