MG Windsor EV: The Hottest-selling EV In Its Segment, But Why?

Yes, it is the funky-looking car that we see a lot on our roads and wonder what’s so special about it!

Launched recently in October 2024, the MG Windsor EV is an electric crossover that has experienced rapid growth since its inception in the Indian market. It has significantly helped MG in improving its sales and is in fact the brand’s best-seller already. It is positioned in a crowded segment where the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400 have been the key players, but its unique personality and value-for-money proposition have made it the best-seller in its segment in very little time!

So what do the buyers find attractive about the Windsor EV, and how has it managed to capture the market? Let’s understand that better:

A Top-seller!

The Windsor EV has managed to record over 3000 units sold for four consecutive months (October to January). These numbers are no joke, especially when there are so many ICE and EV alternatives in the same price range. On the other hand, its chief rival, the Tata Nexon EV, has an average sales of around 1500 units per month. In fact, the Windsor EV even won the Indian electric car of the year 2024 despite plenty of electric vehicles being launched in the year 2024.

With more and more buyers realising what MG is offering for the price, we won’t be surprised to see the numbers go up in the coming months. Now, let's take a look at what makes the Windsor EV special:

MG Windsor EV, Pricing Strategy On Point

MG has used a simple formula - price your product well and it will sell! Not only has MG priced the Windsor EV attractively, but they have also introduced an interesting concept, that is: Battery-as-a-service (BaaS). This option allows buyers to either opt for the car as a whole or purchase it without the battery at a lower price and pay for the battery separately (+Rs 3.5 per km). So basically, you end up paying an additional charge for the battery.

So with the BaaS pricing, the Windsor EV starts from Rs 9.99 (ex-showroom). However, if you want the all-inclusive package, the Windsor EV’s prices range from Rs 13.5 lakh to Rs 15.5 lakh. It is available across three variants, and offers buyers plenty for the price! Here’s a look at what it offers for the price:

Windsor EV: Money Well-spent!

The Windsor EV does not feel like a car that is in the Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh range. It is a crossover with a key focus on the rear seat and a plush cabin experience. The interior of the Windsor EV feels very welcoming and is finished with high-quality materials that feel premium. It has its quirks as well, and the dashboard layout and design are unlike any other vehicle in the segment. There are oodles of space in the rear, much more than its rivals! Trust me when I say: there is no chance you will feel cramped in the cabin and the fit and finish of the cabin overall is top-notch and the best in its segment.

There are plenty of features as well which compliment the roomy interior. You get a large panoramic glass roof which allows plenty of light inside the cabin, and a premium 9-speaker Infinity sound system that enhances the audio experience for passengers. Top amenities include a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 135-degree reclining rear seats, 256-colour ambient lighting, a wireless phone charger, 6 airbags, a 360-degree camera with rear parking sensors.

Powertrain And Ride Comfort

The Windsor EV packs a 38.7 kWh battery pack which powers a single electric motor, producing  136 PS and 200 Nm of torque. While the numbers are not bad and overtaking can be done with ease, the Windsor EV is best enjoyed in the back seat. Its chauffeur-driven nature is accentuated by the comfortable ride providing utmost comfort, even on bad rods. Coming home from a hectic work day? Just recline the rear seat of the Windsor EV, and ride home comfortably.

What Are Your Alternatives?

The Windsor EV is priced around the range of the Tata Punch EV but is essentially a competitor to the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400, both of which are priced higher.

At the price point, the Windsor EV is the most spacious and practical option to consider, especially if you're looking for an electric vehicle to use in the city. We believe that MG has nailed it with the Windsor EV and offered something unique and attractive.
