Volkswagen is all set to reveal its new electric car concept as a part of its road map and expand the electric-only ID family

Volkswagen New EV

German auto giant Volkswagen recently announced its plans to showcase its new entry-level electric car concept in March 2025. Thomas Schafer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Car Brand laid out plans at the works meeting in Wolfsburg. It is to be noted that the entry-level electric model, albeit making its debut in the coming months, will not go on sale globally until 2027. This model will be priced at around 20,000 euros (about Rs 18 lakh).

This new entry-level electric Volkswagen model is likely to serve as a successor to the Up – a small city car. Since it does not have a name yet, we expect the company to call it the ID 1 – the new nomenclature of the ID family, which comprises the ID 3, ID 4, ID 5, ID 7, ID 7 Tourer, and ID Buzz. Before the new entry-level electric vehicle hits the market in 2027, Volkswagen will introduce the ID 2all as its first small electric car by 2026. With prices starting at 25,000 euros, this electric will sit on the brand’s new MEB platform.

More to the point, the new entry-level EV from Volkswagen will feature a new-look design to set itself apart from the conventional models and the ID lineup. Going by the teaser picture, the new electric car will have upright proportions similar to a crossover or an SUV for that matter. Meanwhile, it might use the same MEB architecture as the ID 2all. Interestingly, the ID 2all will be slightly smaller but with a longer wheelbase than the Polo available in the international markets.

While the details about its powertrain are not known yet, it is likely to offer a front-wheel drive motor setup paired with a sizable battery that delivers an estimated range of around 350-450 km. It may also offer fast DC and AC charging capability.

VW ID 2all

While Volkswagen has had several electric-only models under the ID umbrella globally, it has not introduced an EV in the Indian market. Going forward, it is also unlikely that the brand will bring new entry-level electric vehicles to the country in the future. Volkswagen might well develop a market-specific platform otherwise, making the probable future EV cost-effective.
