Upon roll out, this could have a massive impact on Ola’s product pricing and performance

The battery pack is the core component of an electric vehicle. Therefore, localising its manufacturing has tremendous benefits on multiple levels of the EV value chain. With this in mind, Ola Electric has developed India’s first locally manufactured lithium-ion cell. Production of these cells, Ola says, will commence in 2023 at its Gigafactory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu.

This indigenously developed lithium-ion cell is being labeled as NMC 2170, and we believe this is a 21700 cell type, commonly used in most modern electric vehicles. Ola says these cells use lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) on the cathode side, while the anode side gets graphite and silicon. It’s all a bit technical, we know, but here’s the important bit – Ola claims these cells have been developed keeping “indigenous conditions” in mind. Simply put, it’s hoping to make a more robust battery pack that’s better suited for Indian conditions. These cells will be used in the Ola S1 Pro apart from its upcoming offerings. We have reached out to the brand for more info and will update this section as soon we hear back from them.

The EV maker was recently allotted 20GWh (gigawatt hour) bandwidth by the government of India under its ACC PLI scheme for developing cells locally. Ola has plans on using these grants to develop a robust portfolio of products for its future EV lineup. In fact, it has already started work on its first electric car as well.
