Ola exploring LFP cells for future products. Might debut on an affordable scooter?

At a recent visit to Ola’s Future Factory in Karnataka, Bhavish Aggarwal, co-founder Ola Electric confirmed that the future product pipeline includes the introduction of a more affordable electric scooter. At the same event he also spoke of using LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) cells for an upcoming product instead of NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt), both being different chemistries for Lithium-Ion batteries. LFP batteries have lower energy density, but are more stable and also much cheaper. Tightening Nickel availability is forcing manufacturers to look at LFP batteries more closely the world over.

Recent EV scooter fires have also turned the focus on battery chemistries. LFP batteries are said to be more stable at much higher temperatures compared to NMC cells and thus safer for hot Indian conditions. Recently an Ola S1 caught fire in Pune. Ola says the fire is being investigated by an external agency and the results are awaited.

Earlier this year Ola Electric halted production of the lower-priced Ola S1 scooter citing low demand. At a recent event at the Ola Electric factory Bhavish Aggarwal confirmed that the demand for the S1 Pro was as much as 75% of the overall bookings. However, a simpler, more utilitarian and more affordable scooter could help OLA transition to LFP while drawing in the more mass-market audience.
