The Polestar 3 is underpinned by technology developed by Volvo

  • Laden with tech including a host of ADAS features.

  • Gets a 111kW battery pack offering a WLTP-claimed range of up to 610km.

  • 400-V battery architecture allows DC charging capacity of up to 250kW.

  • First round of deliveries scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2023.

Polestar, a company known for making electric sedans with similarities to Volvos (in terms of design), has taken the covers off its third offering ever, and rightfully so, has named it the Polestar 3. It follows the Polestar 1 and Polestar 2 electric sedans but deviates from the Volvo-like design lineage with a brand-specific design as Polestar forays into the SUV space for the first time.

Design

While there is a slot for a grille opening, the area is closed off and houses a radar for all the ADAS functionality of the SUV right below the Polestar emblem on the clamshell. The headlights make it easily recognisable as a Polestar with the updated signature T-shaped LED DRLs – as featured on the models before.

The rear of the SUV looks considerably wide, with a single strip LED spanning its width. Sitting on the 21-inch alloy wheels gives the Polestar 3 a towering stance. The overall silhouette isn’t that of a typical SUV as it leans more toward the crossover spectrum.

Step inside the SUV and you’ll be greeted with one of the cleanest and smoothest flowing interiors dominated by a standing infotainment screen. We say clean because of the absence of physical buttons; the functionalities of which have been tasked to the vertical screen in the middle, and we say smooth because of the minimalistic approach inside.

Features

The features list of the SUV clearly states Polestar’s intent of targeting upmarket clientele. A 14.5-inch infotainment system, a nine-inch digital driver’s display, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, wireless phone charging, voice control, air filter, 360-degree camera, memory function (front seats) and LED lighting inside-out are just some of the features on offer.

The armada of sensors onboard offer a host of ADAS functionality, including forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane departure prevention, blind-spot monitoring, and more. Nine airbags and a rear-view camera further help in aiding the safety quotient of the SUV.

Powertrain

The Polestar 3’s powertrain deploys two electric motors – one at each axle. Powered using a 111kW battery pack, both the electric motors work together and produce 489PS and 840Nm. This power figure is bumped up to 517PS and 910Nm with the performance pack. The standard long-range pack has a WLTP-claimed range of 610km, while it reduces to 560km in the performance pack.

Power is delivered to all four wheels irrespective of the powertrain package. All this performance is tamed using Brembo brakes and air suspension – both offered as standard. Charging speed compatibility of up to 250kW allows a 10-80 percent charge time of 30 minutes. An AC 11kW charger will take 11 hours to top up the battery from zero percent.

Polestar has priced the electric SUV from £79,900 (Rs 63.63 lakh (ex-showroom) converted) in markets abroad. Its launch timeline in India is unknown as the company has no touchpoints in the country. Deliveries in international markets are scheduled for late 2023.
