The new Tata Curvv has been unveiled as a concept electric vehicle (EV) that previews the carmaker’s next-generation electric powertrain and design language. It’s a five-door SUV-coupe that features numerous design cues and features we haven’t seen on a Tata car before.
Here are all its details in ten images:
The Curvv concept EV is the first vehicle that follows Tata’s “less is more” design language. It has a butch front fascia with split headlights and a grille-less nose for better aerodynamics. The lower triangular headlights seem like an evolution of the Tata Safari and Harrier’s design. A slim crease breaks up the front fascia, and a carbon fibre-finish splitter is placed below the bumper.
In the profile, you can see that the Curvv’s roofline slopes sharply downward from the B-pillar onwards. The SUV has rearview cameras instead of ORVMs, and a thin white trim piece below the window line is reminiscent of the Nexon.
The Curvv’s alloy wheels have aerodynamic fin inserts to smooth airflow over the wheels at high speeds. We can’t expect the 20-inch wheels shod with sporty Pirelli P Zero tyres to make it to production, but the aero fins and a similar design could be retained.
At the rear, the SUV features a full-width taillight and triangular air vents that match the headlights at the front. The split windshield spoiler and massive rear bumper lend the SUV a sporty aesthetic.
It’s based on the Generation 2 EV architecture that supports multiple powertrain options, even petrol and diesel engines. Tata hasn’t revealed the battery specs or other powertrain details, but the Curvv-derived production model is expected to deliver 400 to 500km of range.
We also expect that the new platform will be as tough as those of existing Tata SUVs which helps the vehicles achieve commendable five-star safety ratings in crash tests.
Step through the doors and you’ll notice that the Tata Curvv has a large panoramic glass roof that extends almost all the way from the front windscreen to the rear windshield. Expect the production version to be equipped with a panoramic sunroof, instead.
The dashboard in the Curvv concept has a minimalistic, layered aesthetic. Besides, the absence of a traditional centre console gives it a ‘floating’ vibe.
The infotainment touchscreen and driver’s display are separate screens mounted on top of the dashboard. You get a flat-bottom two-spoke steering wheel with a yellowish Tata logo that seems oddly retro. The steering mounted controls are rocker-style switches with touch buttons.
Similar to the Tata Nexon EV, the Curvv concept has a drive mode dial to shift into drive or reverse. The dial is mounted on a dainty glass-topped centre console that extrudes from the front armrest.
At the rear, the Curvv has a pair of bucket seats, although its production version will likely offer a conventional bench rear seat. The cabin seems wide and the seats spacious in concept form, but it remains to be seen how they turn out in the production EV.
A real-life electric SUV based on the Curvv concept will be introduced by 2024. An ICE version of the SUV will also become available later in the future. It’ll rival the Hyundai Creta, VW Taigun and MG Hector, while its all-electric twin will compete with the Hyundai Kona and the MG ZS EV.
