Tata Motors surprised us by teasing a mysterious electric SUV concept, which has been revealed in the flesh as the Curvv. This all-electric SUV Coupe, which comes out of the blue, sits in the same segment as the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. This SUV will go into production as an all-electric vehicle first, followed by ICE versions.
The Curvv follows Tata’s new ‘Less-Is-More’ design philosophy, and going by its name, the minimalist touches do help it stand out. This being an EV first, doesn’t get the traditional grille you find in today’s cars like the Nexon EV for example. But what you get instead is a sleek LED DRL underneath the hood across its width.
Along with the DRL, the new triangle inserts for the LED headlight seems to be an evolution of the current setup found in the Harrier and Safari. The bumper design is chunky and features a front skid plate helping it have a nice and beefy stance up front. Keen eyed enthusiasts will notice the grooves on the bumper and body cladding for more character.
In profile, the Curvv features all the typical design touches you would expect from a coupe SUV. So we get large and muscular wheel arches nicely filled by chunky alloy wheels with inserts for better aerodynamic efficiency. Plus, the subtle lines and creases are kept to a minimum for a clean look. But the highlight ought to be its sloping roofline.
The roof slopes down sharply from the B-pillar and merges on to a flat tailgate, featuring a sleek LED light bar. But that’s not the only lighting wizardry here as the stop lamp is nicely hidden away on the borders of the windshield. Looks cool! A chunky bumper with aggressive detailing and a small LED light mimicking a Formula 1 car rounds off the design.
The ‘Less-Is-More’ design philosophy is more apparent on the interior as the main highlights are the infotainment screen and digital driver’s display. Plus, there is an LED light bar running across the width of the dashboard, while the grooved material below it adds a dash of character. There’s also a panoramic glass roof to make the cabin airier by letting in more light. And the other highlight ought to be the new generation 2-spoke steering wheel featuring Tata’s digital logo.
In a world where car interiors are featuring more screens and less buttons, it’s refreshing to see that Tata has retained physical knobs for important functions like the fan speed, temperature control, and drive selector. We likey! Also, while the concept’s cabin is finished in blue, it’s expected to get conventional colours like black or beige when it goes into production.
Speaking of which, the Curvv will enter production first as an all-electric vehicle, followed by ICE versions. It will be based on Tata’s Generation 2 EV architecture which is capable of supporting multiple powertrain options. The electric version is expected to have a claimed range of 400 to 500km. Like existing Tata cars, this new platform is expected to be safe and get 5-star Global NCAP safety ratings like its existing stablemates.
The Tata Curvv will be launched in production form by 2024 and is expected to be priced around Rs 20 lakh for the electric version, putting it in contention with the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric. The ICE version will fight it out with stalwarts like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, VW Taigun, and MG Astor.
