Electric vehicles have not just brought in a more environmentally friendly powertrain, but also feature their own share of design details including many futuristic elements. The Mahindra XEV 9e is the prime example of futuristic design which probably won’t even make it look outdated after 10 years. On the other hand, we have the newly revealed Tata Harrier EV which looks similar to the Harrier ICE, albeit with some EV-specific design cues of its own.
Both SUVs are contenders in the mid-sized electric SUV segment, but look completely different. So, what makes them stand out and how are their designs special? Let’s find out.
Designs nowadays have become more minimalist and there is a lot of focus on the lighting elements. Starting with the front end, the XEV 9e has a cleaner design while the Harrier EV’s design is on the busier side with plenty going on the middle section of the fascia. Both get sleek LED DRLs which add a nice modern touch, and the XEV 9e’s lighting elements create an L shape surrounding the vertically stacked headlamps. The electric Harrier gets a silver skid plate in the lower section of the bumper, while the XEV gets gloss black elements. The Tata emblem has been positioned on the closed-off grille, while the new Mahindra logo has been positioned on the bonnet.
From the sides, the silhouette of the Harrier EV looks reminiscent of the Harrier ICE, while that of the XEV 9e looks unlike any other Mahindra SUV thanks to its sloping roofline which adds a sporty touch. The Harrier EV comes with conventionally styled door handles, while the XEV 9e gets flush door handles. Both SUVs come equipped with aero-specific alloy wheels. There are plenty of shiny gloss black accents on the sides of the XEV 9e and its wheel arches look chunkier.
Coming to the rear, both SUVs get connected LED tail lamps. The tail lights of the XEV 9e are sleeker and continue vertically till the bumper, while the lights of the Harrier have a more beefed-up look. You get Harrier EV and XEV 9e lettering at the tailgate of the respective SUVs. Both Harrier EV and XEV 9e come with a roof-mounted spoiler, but the latter also gets a shark fin antenna adding to its sporty quotient. The Harrier EV gets a massive silver skid plate adding to the rugged look, while the XEV 9e continues to get the gloss black treatment here as well.

While we do not have the exact dimensions of the Harrier EV, we expect it to be as long as the Harrier ICE which is around 4.6 metres long. The XEV 9e is around 4.9 metres long, almost giving it the dimensions of a full-sized SUV. Stay tuned as we will be bringing out a more detailed comparison of both these SUVs, comparing their specifications, pricing, features and interior.
We expect the Tata Harrier EV to be priced from around Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom). The Mahindra XEV 9e on the other hand, is priced from Rs 21.9 lakh to Rs 30.50 lakh. Both SUVs also compete with the BYD Atto 3.
The design of the XEV 9e is for you if you are someone who wants to stand out and own something unique. The Harrier EV looks similar to the Harrier ICE especially due to the body style and a few common elements. However, the Harrier EV’s more conventional approach could align with your taste if you do not want something that’s flashy and too out there. Which design would you prefer?
